Recoil comparison- .223 vs .243 vs 30-30

Ok guys, we're wrapping up this hunting season next weekend. My son will turn 6 next month and weighs 58lbs. He currently shoots a .223 bolt action like a pro. The recoil barely affects him, he says it doesn't kick at all.
So, I have a 30-30 in the closet collecting dust. Is it time to pass down the 30-30 or will that be a bit much? I've been looking at .243s, they've got some pretty good deals going on right now. I'm gonna take the 30-30 with us next weekend to let him try it out.
Thanks in advance for any help

What deals are you seeing in the 243? Thinking about getting one for myself for something different.

i would just see if he likes the 30-30 before i got the 243. I have zero issues with a 243 but the 30-30 would be fine. Talk it up big before letting him use it and get him excited about it and not scared. Again, nothing wrong with 30-30 i use mine more than any deer rifle i own. Also look into 7mm-08 reduced recoil for him. That is a fine round and something he can use along time!

Since you already have the .30-30 let him try it.
If you're going to buy him a rifle, buy a 7mm-08 instead of a .243

All I've been looking at are youth models. Academy, Bass Pro, and Gander mountain seem to have the best deals right now.

Buy the 243 or 7mm 08. Let him try the 30-30. That way it's a win win.

.223 recoil is about 3 or 4 pounds, .243 is around 8.5 to 11, and 30/30 is about 10 to 12. I think you let him try the 30/30 and if that works, and you want to buy him a youth model rifle then the .243 would be perfect.

Bring the pain, get that kid a 30-06

Earmuffs
My kid is 7 and can shoot a 30-30 as long as he is not thinking about the pop.

Recoil charts are great but they ignore a huge factor in felt recoil which is the fit of the gun.
A .308 that fits well will be much more pleasant to shoot than a .243 that doesn't fit at all.

Bypass the youth model(unless its a decent bolt gun that you can put a adult stock on later) and get a 7mm-08. The reason I say bypass the youth model is because seems what most people choose for a youth model is the crack barrel rifles. Those sumbucks can packa lot bigger punch than a full size in the same caliber.

Ding ding ding we have a winner. I've shot some youth rifles that brought the pain. Fit is way too overlooked when it comes to rifles

I like the .260 or 7mm-08 better than a .243 personally. My some has a .243 but, I didn't buy it for him, my FNL did. My wife has a Rem Model 7 youth .260 and I LOVE it!! I use it when I climb or hunt loc-ons. I've killed deer over 300 yards with it too. The recoil is slightly more then a .243 and is comparable to a 7mm-08.
Plus I think it would be mor versatile as he gets older.
Also make sure the stock fits him, have him put the stock in his elbow instead of his shoulder, see where his finger is on he trigger, not touching, it's to big, finger through to last knuckle, to small.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm gonna put him behind the 30-30 this weekend and see how he handles that, then make a decision based on that. Y'all comments gave me a few new ideas and more info, thanks again!

Just make sure it fits him halfway decent before he lights one off. I'm sure he'll be so excited to shoot the big gun that he won't notice anything, but it sucks to shoot a gun that's wayyyyy too long.
I'm a short bastard so I know all too well

My .30/30 lever action 336 kicks worse than my bolt action .270. If your .30/30 is not a full size gun, I wouldn't let him shoot it. The weight and build of the gun is just as important as the cartridge.

Next year I am moving my 10 year old up to this. Great rifle, adjustable length stock, adjustable trigger, guaranteed to shoot under 1 inch at 100 yds, and priced under 500.00 online. I am going with the 7mm-08 but 243 is another option.

When he shoots the 30-30, give him a fun target to shoot. Fill gallon jugs with water so they explode. I find that helps them worry less about recoil in that situation.

That's a good choice for sure
My dad used to buy life sized deer posters for me to shoot. Did me tons of good as it was more fun than shooting at a dot and he was able to teach me where to shoot and why to shoot there.

THIS
I made that mistake. When my oldest boy was pretty small, I kinda got on his arse for complaining about his recoil from his .410 youth model.
When I finally tried it one time...DAYUM! That little youth model had double the kick of my full-size .410.
I earned the Bad Dad award on that one.
