Just picked up a couple of these catfish traps. Got some cheese to bait with. $25 permit for up to 5 nets. My question to any of y’all that have fished these...do y’all set these in shallow flats or deeper water? I’ve been told that they work better if set vertically a foot or so off the bottom. Any tips?

I have fished wire, wood, and netting. They all work. For whatever reason I never catch anything when I fish any of them vertically. The old guys say that's the best way to fish them. But it doesnt work for me. I'm obviously doing something wrong.

I have had the best luck fishing them in the coldest weather possible. In relatively deep water. Like 12-15 feet or the deepest holes in the lake.

I’ll be honest, I did not know you had to have a separate license for nets and traps. Where did you get your traps?

I’ve got one tied to my pier. All I’ve caught so far this year is bream and crappie (which I released to maintain legal)

I fish with 8 of them. 30” diameter.

Bought two on Erwinville then went to the source in Jonesville to get more.

I use cheese( bought a 400# barrel) and mix it with sweet horse feed.

Caught 75 pounds off of my dock during the last front with one trap. I went and set the new traps yesterday.

If someone would have been watching me they would have laughed. I tied my lines on the wrong end of every trap. After I fixed them ,I set them facing the wrong way.

What kind of throat do your traps have? I’ve learned that there is a finger throat and a flat throat. I have the flat throat for catfish. They tell me the “ finger throat” is better for scaled fish.

I have never set vertically. We fish these in canals with current.

The fish net company. Jonesville,La. interesting site.

Talk to Michael or Lee(owner). Very nice ,knowledgeable people.

In fact, they have the biggest net shop on the USA. They make every kind of net imaginable.

I wish Chedballz would meet me at Nocko’s so I could give him some fish.

Mudcat, are you putting your cheese in a bait bag?

You have to have a gear license for a lot of different things these days.

I chose to fish under the commercial license umbrella. A commercial license cost 55 dollars in Louisiana. The gear license cost the same but you can harvest an unlimited amount of fish and have unlimited nets. With recreational you are limited to a hundred fish across your five nets allowed. There are different allowances on undersized fish.

Go to the LDWF website for your regulations. They are constantly changing and it is prudent to try and keep up.

I’ve been having a blast doing this and enjoying giving a lot of fish away. Lots of folks don’t get fresh fish and they get a big smile when you drop some off to them.

I have the flat throat in my trap. I just bought it a few days ago and haven’t set it out yet. I bought the power bait blocks that is compressed soybeans and cheese. I bought a bait bag to put it in as well. I’m new at this net fishing. I’m usually mad at them crappie. I’ve got a lake about 20 minutes from my house and I’m probably gonna set it in a couple days when I’m off work. I enjoy sharing fish with folks myself. Keep up the good work Bigfishchoupique.

Just curious, is it legal to sell catfish?

It must be, as many people that I see fishing on the Amite as hard as they do.

So just curious where would one sell to? Is it fairly easy to go into a seafood store and get rid of catfish fillets? I would think it would be a tough market.

I bought two cases. The man that loaded my traps is the guy that cooks up the stuff. And he is a salesman.

Heard nothing but good thing about the Powerbait. Easy to use and not messy.

I bought a drum of cheese trimmings to leave in the sun all summer. Should be ripe next winter.

When you set your net, set it bottom first so that the bait winds up near the throat. I was setting mine with the bait in the back. The pro’s corrected me.

I’m fortunate enough to have a couple of Master Catfisherman from Des Allemands who I am learning from. They are in their mid seventies and still fish. Both were raised as commercial fisherman. I have a lot of respect for those men.

Read and look at the photos on the site I linked. You will see what those nets catch.

Good fishing.

Wild catfish are a lot of folks preference down here. Most stores sell farm raised.

You need a Louisiana Fresh Products license to sell fish to the public.

You need a Commercial license to sell to a Wholesale/Retail dealer. .

You need a Wholesale/ Retail license to sell to restaurants, institutions or if you have a place of business.

One of the guys I know filets and sells by the pack. (Avoids having a certified scale). 5 bucks a pack ( pound). He sold 15,000 packs last year. He has a large customer base.

The other man sells his fish whole. I think he moved about 4,000 pounds last week.

Put mine off the end of my dock last Saturday. Picked it up today.
After culling the mud cats and turtles, I ended up with 2 gallons of fillets.

The bass didn't bite after the front, but the trap carried the day

I don’t think he is culling ops, tabby, yellow cat, or Goujon. ( all names for the same catfish ie. flatheads)I think what he is calling mudcats are those short little yellow/green bullheads we have down here. They ain’t worth a shite to eat in my opinion.
