I feel like I could make a shibumi shade for like 50 dollars. My MIL has a sewing machine.

Pretty sure I saw someone comment previously that they did and it wasn't worth it. Over a 100 in materials iirc. Then time/labor.

I've used the Shibumi and the Neso. I own a Neso gigante. I would go with Neso. Both are very easy to set up and break down, but the Shibumi is less flexible because it's totally dependent on wind and the direction of the wind. It's also a bit loud if the wind is blowing over 10-12kts. I'd go with the Neso.

My wife and I have used this one this summer with our 9 month old.

Pretty cheap and VERY EASY setup. However it's more of a tent than canopy.

Saw a several of those last week on St George Island. They work great when the wind is blowing and look easy to put up. Gotta say I am intrigued.

Maybe where we are were early adopters, but that’s now 7 summers of seeing them so my point stands.

I have done it both ways. 2 poles is plenty enough though, you do get a marginally bigger area with 4 poles, more standing room really, but 2 poles gives you a pretty big area.

If it is windy you want just two poles, you are suppose to face it into the wind. It holds pretty good as long as you angle poles like the video.

It’s a good thought.

I don’t see the 25 foot Dac pressfits anywhere.

These guys protect ther product patent pretty well.

Patent

I will say this…..

The obvious tech is in the design of the shade. But the packing bag and where the line goes in along with the pole section of the bag is also noteworthy.

I found a 20 ft one which would work if you make the mini. Not super cheap though.

LINK

Youtube has a video on making a mini and says the found a 20 foot for 20 dollars and uses beach blankets made of parachute fabric so there is less work involved.

LINK

Guy on reddit bought poles and shock cord from quest outfitters and you can make any size pole you want that way. LINK

I actually have some big poles that were for a 10 man tent that someone threw away. I'm gonna go home and see if they are wide enough and I have enough to make 25 feet. Then just buy some shock cord to make my pole. I have some parachute cord to tie a bag to. So all I would need is two of those beach blankets like they use in the video to make either one big one or two minis.

The 20 foot pole might have to have more give and be slightly thinner.

Not sure on the thickness of the Shibumi Dacs.

But if they are 13mm or so, the 20 foot should be 11 or 12.

Eta. Is there any legality to making your own? I assume the law only applies to maki g your own version and selling it.

The guy on reddit used .433 inch for his 25 foot one. Which would be 11mm. I don't know what shibumi size is though.

I don't see how there could be any legality to making your own, just if you started a business I'm sure.

While on the subject.

These tables go well with the shades.

They pack up same width.

Light.

I bought the Neso Grande (9'x9') for a beach trip to CA over the 4th and purchased the two extra poles for about $30. It turned the canopy from a lean-to type setup to a full overhead canopy. Had to show a little Badger pride on the beach!

Yeah, I watched some videos on the neso grande vs the shibumi and decided I liked the neso way better.

Got a Grande with 4 poles used once off market place for 100 dollars. Going to pick up tomorrow.

Eta: how's that cart do in the sand?
