So, I bought this sweet little set-up recently to do some duck hunting and small water fishing:

The problem is, the boat has never been registered before and the original owner only used it in small ponds so he didnt keep up with the paperwork from when he bought the boat 4 years ago. Is there any way to get this boat registered or am I SOL?

The boat and motor was a really good deal, so selling the boat and buying one with a paper trail is definitely an option, but I was just trying to avoid that if possible. Thanks.

ETA: Unless I can find a manufacturers statement of origin or a previous title and/or registration, the boat cannot be registered in the state of Louisiana.

Can you get the past owner to execute a notorized bill of sale?

From another forum

I contacted LDWF and they stated I needed Notarized Bill of Sale, Last registered document (which he can't find), and a new Registration form.

I can "find" a bill of sale if needed. I just don't know if LDWF will register it without a title/previous registration associated with it.

I think they will. May have to do that affidavit of ownership found on the boat section of their site.

Roger that. Ill call them back. When I told them I bought a used boat without a papertrail I was told that I was SOL.

there was a recent post on LAS about this, now that I think about it. Lemme find it.

ETA: Nevermind, it was about registering an out of state boat.

would it be that hard to get this? the hull should have a serial number, and you could call the manufacturer to get it

You have to get it where they bought it from, and the original purchaser has to request it. So, whoever originally bought the boat from, say, Academy (it's an alumacraft so I assume it came from there), would have to call/go to Academy and request the MSO.

A buddy of mine built his own boat from scratch and got it registered in Alabama somehow. I remember it was a pain in the arse though.

That is different. There are forms for that.

This is reminding me of Hitchiker's Guide.

Can you get a friend or relative to register it in another state...then "sell" it to you with a registration and notorized bill of sale?

Hmm... You bring up an option I hadn't considered. Very interdasting. I happen to have a brother in TX who would be agreeable to this. Let's have a look see at the TX regs.

Even if it worked, I think you would have to pay sales tax in Texas and then again in Louisiana...

Damn. Well anyone have a 12-14' previously titled/registered boat they are looking at selling on the cheap, say $200-300?
