Looking to upgrade my twin boys zebco to something they can use long term. Would I be wrong to get them something a little shorter, like 6' medium heavy with a fast action?

We mostly fish a large (over 9 acre) pond with lots of brush from the bank, sometimes we will hop in a little flat boat and paddle the edges.

Pond has bass, bream, perch. I mostly hook up a Texas rigged worm on their rods.

Not looking to spend over $80 a set up, got to buy two of them.

Get them an ugly stick combo. Either academy or wal mart. Can’t break them and they are pretty good

You’ll get chastised for saying any type of combos for a kid from academy! haha

But yes, a combo should be suffice from academy for a 7yr old. Don’t have to over think this, get what you willing to spend knowing it may end up broken or dropped in water.

Have a 7yo and a 4yo. They both got Ugly Stick 5’10” spinning rods and Okuma reels for Christmas.

Yep. Throw whatever spinning reel you want on a 5'6 or 6' ugly stick. Let them have at it.

All 3 of my kids were fine using this spinning combo by the age of 4.

My first “real” setup was an ugly stick with a shimano spinning reel. It was a damn fine Easter present. My bulldog proceeded to devour it a week later. I was devastated. My only advice is to be careful with bulldogs. They aren’t very smart and love stuff that smells like fish. I miss the dog way more than the pole.

That's not going to be a lot of fun.

I know medium heavy is everyone's default for bass and plastics, but I've always fished a 6.5 medium (St Croix). I've caught two over 10 lbs and the rod was plenty, and when you get smaller fish it's a little more fun.

FWIW I've moved in the same direction for inshore, going with lighter rods for more fun.
