My neighbor is selling a Ruger mini 30. It is in great condition and shoots 7.62x39.
Anyone have any thoughts on this gun? What would be a fair price? I was not looking for another rifle at the moment, so it’s not a rifle I’m just dying to have. Don’t want it bad enough to spend a ton but at the same time I like buying guns.

Looks like this:

$800-975 is pretty typical for a used but good condition mini. Fun to shoot, like an AR or AK without the scary frame. Good ranch gun

My only awareness of the gun is from these memes

I love mine
what is the price?

mine was 799 new. I’ve since added a composite stock, red dot, adjustable gas block and suppressor. Great rifle and ammo is available

perfect hog rifle and great fun to shoot

It’s got no optics or anything. I threw out an offer of $500. I know that’s lower than he wants or what the gun is worth on the market but it’s not a must-have.

But now with the positive feedback here and I’m reading up on it, the gun seems pretty sweet so maybe I’ll offer more for it.

I had one for a brief period. One thing you have to remember about them, they shoot patterns not groups. It was fun to shoot but not the most accurate thing by far.

The Mini series reputation suffers in comparison to the AR platform.

It was designed as a tough rifle that one would have handy to shoot a coyote or similar, but because of its Garand-type looks and mag capacity, people want to use them to dump rounds downrange.

The barrel has a skinny profile, and it suffers from wandering zero as the barrel heats up.

If he takes 5 he is dumb, he can sell it in minutes for under market value and still get much higher than 5.

The newer ones are supposedly much better. The old ones had goofy chambers or bore diameters or something like that.

ruger accuracy was reworked by manufacture in the 1995 period of time with good success. I would confirm the date and make sure the gun is a newer edition.

I have a min 14 in 223 purchased in. 2013 and it is enjoyable to shoot

Buy it! They’re fun guns especially when shooting pigs under feeders.

correct, which was 25 years ago. The “noodle barrel” mini complaint is long since over. Mine will keep 2” groups at 100 yards which is about as far as I can see anyway

It’s not a precision long range shooter and never was. What it is is an indestructible fun to shoot traditional style rifle in semi auto, based on one of the (if not the) best action designs ever invented

I have a mini 14 from 1978 that was gifted to me. I’ve only shot the gun a few times but it seems to work well. The above pic is barrel stabilizers that’s supposed to eliminate the barrel whip.

yes I have one on my 30, that and the adjustable gas block work wonders for super cheap. The gas block let’s me shoot subs with the suppressor and it still cycles like a sewing machine. Also cuts down on the 20 yard brass fling at eject

Personal opinion, I wouldn't go any higher than that.

Primary appeal of 7.62x39 is cheap steel ammo. My limited understanding is that the Mini 30 suffers some unreliability with the cheap steel, in comparison to com-bloc guns such as the AK and SKS.
Add in the fact that you're no longer going to see ultra-cheap steel ammo (at the same cost as 9mm), and the gun is no longer worth it.

The benefit over an AK- none.
The benefit over an SKS- detachable 30 rd mags.
The benefit over an AR in this caliber- it looks like a hunting rifle.

The mags for this are more expensive.

I put together an AR for under $400 in this caliber, am satisfied in it's function. For that price point I thought it was a "must-have" prior to the ammo ban; now it's a nice novelty unless we can secure futures sources of CHEAP ammo. I sure wouldn't invest 7,8 hundred into the caliber now.

Had one for many years and love it

It’s a sophisticated AR but mine only shoots .233 so not sure how it would do both .223 and 7.62.
Did you mean 5.56?

mini 14 = .223/5.56
mini 30 = 7.62x39
