I hunt a spot in the woods with a couple shooting lanes. Last year I threw out some rye grass and it came up nicely.
Is there something that deer would prefer that would come up just from throwing seeds - not planting?
Looking to throw something out Wednesday before the rain

Rye will definitely come up and look pretty, but the deer don't necessarily like it. There are several throw and grow mixes that you can plant no-till style. It's better if you can scratch the ground a little though. Usually some clover/rape/rye mixes.

Domain seed no BS

Take a rake and rake up your lanes scratching the ground. Then throw your seed down

Elbon rye

Deer eat rye grass. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. They just eat it in its infancy then it becomes a weed.

We killed more deer than you can count on rye grass plots growing up.

Once the acorns are gone they will eat it.

Typically stay away from Rye, Wheat and Oats. They will grow a good looking plot but that's a sign they just don't use it and they really don't when you compare it to other forage options. This season turnip and mustard greens have beat out my clover areas hands down but red and white clover have been the best results most years. I try to mix in some pea see, chicory, rape. Those will draw and keep deer close. Your plots are not gonna be pretty, they will be well work down and used...but active and that in the end is what we really want.

Go to just about any of the co-ops near you and most all of them will have some sort of buck blend of seeds. Like, rye, clover, rape, turnips, etc.. They are usually pretty inexpensive and will all grow by just throwing on the ground as long as they touch the dirt. We have had pretty good luck for years doing that. About the only thing that will keep it from growing is no rain or turkeys. Those damn birds will eat it all if they find it.
