Can someone please tell me what the sales tax is for a used boat purchase from a private seller in Louisiana ? It’s seems the internet is all over the place on this from 0 to 4.5%. Also, it appears you need a separate bill of sale for both boat and trailer ? Thanks !

I don’t think there’s a sales tax on a used boat.

There was one temporarily a couple years ago buy I think it’s gone.

Correct. I think there was a sales tax for just a few months. Talk about bad luck if you bought a boat in that time period. But enough people made a stink of it and was rescinded quickly from what I understand.

Others are correct. Only tax on the trailer. Separate bill of sale will make things easier.

No tax on use boat from private seller.if you can get title on boat, trailer, and motor. If it's less than 10 years old.

No tax on a used boat, but you might have to fill out the tax form and have it stamped by the dept of revenue. I bought a used boat from Arkansas and registered it in Louisiana last year. I had to have that tax form stamped by the state office and the local office dept of revenue before WLF would register it. I'm sure you already know this, but the trailer needs a title to be registered in LA, not just a BOS. Boat/motor just need the notarized BOS and the previous registration. Previous registration needs to match the sellers name on the BOS. There are ways around this like with a Justice of the Peace, but this is the easiest.

I say less than 10 but that's just an arbitrary number. I don't know the exact year they started titling motors.

It’s just the trailers. Lots of 40 thousand dollar boats are sitting on $100 trailers according to the bill of sale.

This isn't a thing.

Title on boats and motors was an optional deal last time I did it.

The tax certification is only on out of state used purchases, I think.

Talk about such a scam. I bought a used boat in the period that had the tax, I went to register it but the tax was revoked and they still made me pay it bc of the sales date on the notarized title. I was FUMING.

It is "optional" but on a newer boat that you may want to trade in you will need a title on the motor.

100%. I just went through this last year when I sold my boat.
