I’ve found they generally aren’t attracted to licks alone. They will hit them if in a high traffic area or near a feeder. They like the salt more than anything, minerals are a bonus. You can make your own with stock salt, trace mineral, and di-cal from the feed store at a fraction of what you’ll pay for premix.

Yea they work. I just use cattle blocks. I’ve been putting the blocks in the same spot for 10 years. The salt will dissolve into the dirt and they will eat the dirt when the blocks are gone. I just freshen up my spots every year with a couple new blocks.

ETA: If you look close, there are remnants of a stump under those blocks. When the salt dissolves, the deer will gnaw on the wood. And like the other poster said, They hit them good spring, summer, and pretty much quit around October.

Thanks all.

I'm going to go to Tractor Supply Co. later and just pick up a salt block and give it a try.

This is for backyard viewing, not hunting.

Thought about a feeder, but I don't want to deal with racoons and bears tearing it down.

Had no luck with blocks tried it for years. Have good success with bag salt directly on the ground. They will eat the dirt 4 inches deep at times during the summer months. Waste of time in winter.

Blocks work fine for me. When I start a new lick, I’ll put out loose trace minerals.

What has worked the best for me is just the cheap bags of water softening salt. Gather a bunch of rotten/semi rotten wood and logs, make a pile then pour the salt over the wood. As said, they’ll eat the wood and dirt.

Let me give you huge tip. In a few weeks walmarts everywhere will start discounting those huge 50 pound bags of salt they have for pools etc. the Walmart in Hattiesburg gave them away at the end but I bought most for 2.50 a bag to a 1.00 a bag. The deer loved the fine and rock salt types. The big pellets not as much. Pour that on old stump with a little bit of Cmere deer or swamp donkey or just syrup and deer will come. I had hundreds of picks a day on one of the licks.

A buddy of mine reccomended one of those Himalayan pink salt block for bucks. Got one at Academy and put it out and immediately started seeing more buck pics. This was about a month ago and they still come in pretty regularly.

This time of year with the heat is when they are hitting salt/minerals.

I am in Alpharetta/Cumming area along the big creek greenway. My neighbor has one and and auto feeder. They love it here. We have deer almost everyday.
