Sending knife into Benchmade for sharpening...worth it?

Is there anything inherently better about their sharpening process? Is the free service worth the time away and having to get it back into as-purchased condition?

I use a Lansky kit with an extra fine stone.
I don't think any knife I've bought from them came any sharper than I can get them.

My only complaint with their sharpening is they out very obtuse angles on their blades. So if you sharpen with a knife sharpener at 15-20 degrees. Your likely not even going to touch the edge of the blade without a lot of backbeveling work

Well I’d definitely never get the geometry as perfect as it is now.
I bought an M4 blade, I wonder if they put the same geometry edge on everything?

I’ve done it with my Griptilian b/c I’ve just had a difficult time putting a proper edge on the 154CM steel. I plan to continue to do it. As I recall seems like the turnaround time was a couple weeks from mailing to return. Of course you’ll need a backup Benchmade to use while your other Benchmade is away.

I think it's worth it. I just sent one back a few weeks ago after carrying it for a couple of years as a "box opener" knife. They did their usual excellent job - far better than I could.
I don't care for Benchmade's politics. But every time they sharpen a knife and box it up to return it, they have to lose money. They only charge $5 for this.

Depends on the blade steel. S90V, CPM M4, any steel loaded with vanadium carbides is going to be difficult to sharpen with anything most people have access to. A Lansky kit is going to be frustratingly difficult on S90V or M4 and the edge you are likely going to wind up with is going to be worse than where you started. I have plenty of sharpening tools, everything from whetstones, diamond sticks, two WorkSharp units including the blade grinding accessory, Japanese waterstones, etc and I sent off my 940-1 to Benchmade to let them take care of it. My other 940's are S30V, can put a hair-popping edge on those, same for my knives in Elmax, ZDP-189, S35VN.

You also pay to ship it there and it takes them only minutes to put an edge on if they simply don't replace the blade. They also clean and replace any other worn parts, which is good if you have a model with an omega spring or Axis lock. I'm tempted to send in my very well worn Presidio to see what they say.

The edge looks machine applied.

They are, CBN wheel grinders probably. Think I remember seeing a factory tour video and they were mounted on work tables.

I would honestly be pissed if that was the edge they sent back.
I carry a small Buck prince everyday. Every few months I send it back to buck and they return it to like new condition.
Buck puts a mirror edge with no serration. Something I can't do for less than 8 bucks.
ETA: to be clear that much polish on an edge is garbage for most people. Won't even slice a tomato at first.

No telling what I’d get back. It’s probably worth doing once to see.
I’m guessing the factory edge is put there to maximize edge longevity, and sharpness is secondary. A polish like you’re talking about is the reverse of that. IDK though.

Imo people worry about angles too much. If you want to be anal retentive and have it exactly how it came from the factory all the time, then send it off. I sharpen all my own knives. And I sharpen consistently at the same angle. I have no idea what that is. But they are all sharper then they need to be. And bc I do it myself, it’s takes 30 secs to touch up. Just my opinion.
