Looks like I had a wad hang up in my barrel and shot again behind it causing a bulge about halfway down my barrel. What's the protocol here? Would a manufacturer replace just the barrel? I'm assuming it's not safe to keep using?

Say a little prayer of thanks that it didn’t blow up in your face. You can get replacement barrels for most shotguns. Take it to a gunsmith and let them look it over and take it from there.

Wouldn't this cause the shot to stay in the barrel also?
Are you shooting steel shot through an old shotgun?
That's what happens when you shoot steel through those old Browning A5's

IF the barrel has a ring bulge and it doesn't have a vent rib the bulge can be swedged out with a press and the right tools. A bore size brass rod is inserted in the bore and brass swedge blocks are pressed down to take out the bulge, like a dent remover in reverse. If done tight it will not effect the shooting of the gun and will be unnoticeable with out careful measurement.

Unless it's a high value or antique shotgun it's time to replace the barrel. Manufacturers will not replace user mistakes, be thankful no one was injured.

Is this actually user error? I can see why the manufacturer wouldn't replace it for free, but I was trying to figure out what I could have done differently to prevent it from happening. Ducks flew in, I fired three times, noticed the bulge. It didn't sound different, feel different.

5 years ago I had a barrel blow out the right side due to a reload misfire followed by a second shot. Son was standing on left side and unharmed.

Hacksaw right behind the bulge turns it into a home defense gun.
Buy a new barrel for hunting.

Contact shell company and gun company with pictures and see what they say. Buddy did this and got a new barrel. It was just an 870 so pretty cheap and he would have bought another.
His ddi spit and shattered the forearm in his hand. No injures and I was standing next to him.
We both shot and he did not feel it and another Teal came and he pumped and shot again and boom.
Hand was numb but unhurt as was my face to his right.
Try and see what they say to both shell and gun company.
Glad you also went unscathed.

Were you shootings black cloud shells? Cause I had the exact thing happen to me. I’m running a browning maxus with an extended choke out the end. Looked down at the barrel and it looks like right where the choke stops inside my barrel there is a ring all the way around it.

Also a browning maxus but not those shells and the bulge was close to the receiver.
