Skipjack Herring from Louisiana?

I'm always scouring the internet for Skipjack to use as catfish bait. Most all that I see is expensive (like $5-$7 per pound) and it comes from N AL or Tenn. Clean, cold TVA hydro dams. The limit there is 100 per day and there's no commercial take allowed. Which is why they're so expensive.
Anyhow, this weekend I just bought some nice frozen ones for $3 a pound from a guy in Natchez. He said he gets them from commercial fishermen in Louisiana every spring.
Does anyone know where or when or who or how this goes down? I would be interested in 1000# or so if I could get a bulk deal direct off the boat.
The OB will sniff this one out for sure....

P maws in Springfield usually has frozen skipjack in the spring. Might be worth a call there to see if they’ll give you the boat guy(may be them) or see what #1000 would cost.

Catch them on sibiki rigs under the bridge near midendorfs

Do you know what kind of sabiki to use? I’ve tried this a few times and always average like one for every ten casts. I figured I’d missing some secret.

Call Chief Carl Dunn of the Baker police dept. He fishes the river for catfish. Skipjack has proven to be the best bait by far.
He has sources and I know he would share. Check out his Facebook. He’s always bringing folks on their first fishing trip. Many times their first boat ride. He’s a fine sportsman and fishing friend.

Other than the Mississippi river I know of only one other place to catch them If they are that expensive, I may have to start catching them and selling them. There should be some at Three Rivers lock and dam though.

Skipjack are the best catfish bair I've ever used. We don't have skipjack here but when I'm back in Missouri, that's all I do.

Live buffalo for spotted cats (flatheads) is hard to beat. Only know of one place in the state that sells them.

They dip net for them certain times of the year. My son worked at a crab factory and he told me people would come in with the bed of their pickup truck full and they had to box them. They would freeze them and store them for crawfish and crab bait.

Can you give me just a basic idea of where ?
The guy I bought them from also said that they dip netted them because they were so thick at a certain time of year

I have a buddy that is big into catfishing (tight lining) in the MS River. He catches all the skipjack he needs on sabiki rigs prior to fishing.

We have always caught them ourselves too. The best thing I have found was to make a double rigs similar to a spec-rig using white perch tube jigs. Red body, white skirt has been the best color. 32/oz or 16/oz white heads. There is defiantly a trick to hooking the suckers when they bite. When you figure out the timing you don't miss them. Sharpening the hooks helps. Light action rods have seemed to be the best as well.

He is trying to get you a ticket, LOL. They don't let people fish below the water control structures anymore. They even give tickets for bank fishing too close.
If they are dipping shad below the hydro plant on the Mississippi in the area know as 3 Rivers you can buy them right off the boat for beer or a few bucks. This is where it goes down. They fill their commercial boats with them and shad. They sell their catch to to the fish dock in Simmesport Louisiana. Attached to that dock is a store called called "Danny's Bait Shop and Grocery". They will sell you whatever every you want. 225-492-2365

I think he is referring to the Old River Control Structure system. I have driven down below the hydroelectric dam an talked to those fellows while they dip.
Sometimes it’s skipjack and sometimes gizzard shad they catch. He would catch several thousand pounds a day. He fishes where the current forms an eddy and heads back to the dam right against the bank.
Thanks for all the info y’all provided on catching them on Sabiki’s.

Ouachita-Black river locks and dam. We always called it 3 rivers. Not sure what locals call it.

They dip them on the lakeside of the Bonne Carre Spillway when the river rises.
Also, would you know where I could buy a vessel the holds ice for a few days with a lid that opens and closes?

I’m not sure about skipjack but learn to throw a cast net and you can catch tons of shad on your own. Sorry I have no idea on purchasing skipjack.

My apologies. What the people in my area call 3 Rivers is the Old River Control System. Apparently there are multiple areas that are called 3 Rivers in Louisiana.
The shad dippers are usually only out there below the hydro when the market is hot for shad and herring. I haven't seen them dipping lately. During crawfish season they are out there nearly every day.

All I've heard is rumors and innuendo. But the supply chain is nearly back to normal. So there's a chance I might be able to point you in the right direction come November
