Looking at puppies again, and stumbled across a (beautiful) all brown (liver?) GSP puppy, no ticking or spots.
I've never seen this before... I'm interested, just concerned...

Solid liver is not only a normal color for GSPs it is a badass one imo. There is probably a small patch of white or ticking on the chest.

My wife and I foster for the southeast German shorthair rescue and we have had every color except a liver. I think it's a good thing cause I'd be tempted to keep it.

Just a few from Google. The other color we had that I really liked but isn't recognized by the akc ( I believe) was a black and white ticked male. He was almost roan but would probably classify as ticked. He was beautiful.

I'd post a link to the pup, but I don't want to lose it to someone not swamped with finals

Yeah, I agree, I think they're absoluty beautiful, just wasn't sure if it was a bad sign or something like white in boxers or something to that extent

I've never heard of anything like that and my wife is a vet (which makes me only slightly qualified to answer your question). Have you met the pups parents? The breeder legit or do you have concerns about them?

Pics of parents on there, one of them is mostly brown with maybe a very subtle ticking, so that makes me feel better about it, and there does appear to be a golfball to baseball sized white spot on pup's chest

ETA AKC registered

They are not as common but they are out there. There is a German Shorthair Pointer's facebook page with many members and I see pics pop up from time to time. You really want to see the parents and their pedigrees...

Growing up we had a liver bitch with heart shaped ticking on her chest. Parents were both impressive, so was she. Miss that dog

I got mine from Poplarville, MS. they had a male in his litter that was solid liver, with a white tipped tail, had he been solid I probably would have gotten him instead.

Family friends brought their 12 week old GSP to a BBQ a while back. He was almost black. I had never seen anything remotely close to this guys color. They proceeded to tell me they brought him back from Europe. Don't shoot the messenger, but they were saying how the almost black coat was preferred and highly sought after across the pond.

Edit: Here was his coat color. Trying to find an actual picture of him

AKC does not accept black coats in the standard, but I think Canada does.

There are plenty out there in the US and elswhere, just not accepted under AKC. Black is a throw back color...

Goodluck with the puppy hunt, especially a GSP. Wife and I will be getting a GSP pup shortly.

Never seen a black GSP, very cool but I think I prefer the liver.

While I love the way my liver and roan GSP looks, that solid liver is sexy as hell
