A post on another board regarding cooking and eating Spanish Mackerel surprised me. Most said it is an oily fish and disgusting and should be thrown away. Now it might not be my first choice, but if I catch a few I'll fry them up that night and enjoy the hell out of them. They don't keep well and sure as hell don't freeze, but why the hate?

I should preface this with the fact that I'll fry and eat gaftops the same day as well...so maybe I'm demented.

I've frozen them and they were alright when fried. Definitely not trout but not bad. No worse than redfish IMO.

Pride and Pride alone stops me from keeping them, Gaftops, channel mulllet, croakers, etc....

I hear how all those fish eat good. Fortunately, I catch enough trout not to have to worry about it. Just enough, but enough.

Most I know won't keep them except to use them as bait. I personally haven't, but my BIL swears by smoking them and making a dip out of them. He's a Florida boy so take it for what its worth.

If by channel mullet you're talking about whiting, I've been told they're just as good as specks and freeze as well as them too. Never caught more than one or 2 here and there

I have no shame eating croacker or channel mullet. In fact channel mullet are damn good. Spanish and kings, meh. Especially to kings

I think this is a common experience. There have been days when it is going slow and the first fish to hit the box are gaftop or Spanish. We generally don't bring protein to the camp and while I do keep some frozen fish there, I'm not defrosting trout to eat unless we get company or have nothing else to eat. So I'll keep them. When the trout start hitting later great, but I'm not throwing away what I consider decent eating fish. I'm not that proud.

I kept king mackerel for the first time ever yesterday. Had a guy tell me how to cook them. He says they are his favorite fish to eat, but he's from the seychelles so we shall see.

We kept Spanish mackerel when I lived in Florida considering the limit for specs was like 5, haven't kept since moving back but I suppose if I got on a nice mess of them I would

I used to work on a shitty charter boat and had to bite my tongue when the Capt. would tell clients that kings were decent eating. Croaker and Channel Mullet are great eating fish.

Keep just enough to cook that night.

Otherwise I toss them back.

I will not eat gaftops just because of the mess they would make in my ice chest. It seems like those things have an endless amount of slime.

Spanish Mackerel have a strong bitter/fishy taste. To me they are not a good fish to eat and I will toss them.

However if you like smoked fish they do taste pretty good when prepared that way.

I learned to keep them living in West Florida for a spell. I throw them on my smoker and make fish spread, damn good.
