Squirrel dog!

I’m looking to buy a squirrel dog but I don’t want to break the bank on it. I’d prefer a cur but I’m not against getting a feist or smaller dog. I just prefer the bigger dogs. I live in south Arkansas. I have dog pens that I can fit several dogs in. Just bought a new place a couple months ago. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Man, squirrel dogs cost some bucks!
I don't have specific recommendations, but there are a hell of a lot of folks that have and sell dogs in the Tupelo, MS area.

A good one is worth it though. Just incredible to watch. I had never seen a good one work , just always still hunted, but got to go with a guy over Christmas break a few years ago and it really wasn’t much hunting. We just walked tree to tree just listened to the dog barking and scoping up there to find the squirrel and popped them. Dog would catch them on the way down and crush their heads, and bring them to us. Then had another one tree’d in no time. They had hunted this area many times, which was close to the Olla high fence area, but not in it. They had a hunt earlier in the year, where they took a bunch of kids with them and filmed the dog, which was a female lab/curr mix and they killed 99 on film that morning. The guy said he’d had offers of $10,000 for the dog, and just couldn’t part with it. Told him if there was ever a pup, I’m in...

Pro tip from experience
Between 4 months and a year old they need to be in the woods three times a week. Take the dog for a 20-30 min walk three times a week.
You can have the best bloodlines in the world and if you are not willing to hunt the dog on the reg you will end up with junk.
Good luck and remember. You get out of a dog what you put in.

Just the opposite here. Got a mountain cur from the pound. He hates a squirrel and can tree one with the quickness, but is as gun-shy as a dog can be.

I've had a couple rat terriers I trained my self as a kid. I kept a squirrel in the freezer and I'd drag it around the yard up the side of a tree then hide it in the tree. I'd let him chew it a second . Once we started killing squirrels with him I'd feed him the hearts and stuff. Killed many squirrels with him.
If you really want one to hate a squirrel wound one and let it bite the dog when it hits the ground. The dog will want to kill every squirrel for miles

I had a black Lab that treed squirrels. He didn’t bark but he hunted so close it didn’t matter. If he reared up on tree there was a squirrel there. When I shot it out he would grab it and didn’t want to give it up,I’d have to pry his mouth open.

I use my English coonhound (who happens to be a hell of a good coon dog) for squirrels. I love the big dogs too. Mine weighs 90 pounds.
Best thing I can tell you is you need time and be ready to go through some dogs. I went through something like 8 dogs before I ended up with the one I have.
Get a puppy, spend lots of time with it, teach it what you want it to do, and enjoy the results. Treeing hounds are very smart and very driven just like labs and need much of the same training. Be firm, be rewarding, and enjoy it. Some of those 8 dogs would have probably been decent if I had known what I was doing.
I wouldnt trade my dog for any I've hunted with. He isnt a world champion or anything but he handles fantasticly and handling is more important than treeing IMO.

I've never hunted squirrels with a dog but always thought it would be cool to get one but screw dropping that kind of $. I'll just swallow my pride.

You need another gun on your next tree rat round up?

Thanks for all the replies. I got a mountain cur last night out of the Smith’s Streak bloodline. He’s 4 months old. He was a little skiddish after I picked him up but he’s livened up this morning. Guess we will see how he turns out. He treed while I was picking him up yesterday afternoon

That's a good sign. Curs are usually a little quicker to grow up than hounds.
