Never done it but it looks like fun. How does a guy get into it? Any leads on a good dog?

Forum.gon. Com go to the small game hunting section, there's some squirrel dog experts and legends on there. Without even making a post you can just read for days on squirrel dogging and learn more than you ever wanted to know. Guys from all over, not just GA.

Did this regularly as a kid..likely the most enjoyable and active hunting I’ve ever done

It’s a lot of fun. If you buy a seasoned dog or have someone bring one in to hunt might want to make sure it’s used to hunting in the terrain that you’re on. We’ve had a few guys bring squirrel dogs to our club before over the years and you could tell they were good dogs and knew what they were doing but had never been in palmetto before and it was throwing them off a pretty good bit. It’s completely anecdotal and may not be the case for all dogs but just something to consider.

Had something similar happen years ago.
While working in NE Oklahoma I met a couple guys that supposedly had some world class coon dogs. They brought them down here to S LA and the dogs were completely baffled. They didn’t know what to do. Heard a couple cold trail barks but that was about it. Pretty soon they came back to us with a WTF look. The hunters did remark when they got down here that they were amazed at all the trees. I guess the dogs were too.

Grew up hunting with my grandpa who always had a squirrel dog. All his dogs came from the pound, if they looked like they had a little fice in them that’s the one he’d bring home. Best days of my childhood was squirrel hunting with paw paw and his dogs. Think I was about 15 before I knew their was another way to hunt squirrels!

It pretty incredible if you have a good dog. It’s not so much hunting as it is racing to the next tree’d squirrel, and trying to shoot it before someone else does, lol. We filmed killing 99 one morning, with a big group of family during the late holidays one year, before our amazing dog died. Dog was a legend, female cure/lab mix that basically learned how to hunt with all senses on her own. She’d crush their heads when they hit the ground, and retrieve them, and have another tree’d in no time. It was something to behold, a freak of nature. People offered $10,000 dollars for her, but was never sold, and when she died, she had a funeral, and more people attended than if a person died. Everyone seemed to understand that perfection in nature, doesn’t come around too often……It’s truly something to experience, if you have a great dog!!

Second this. They breed some incredible dogs. Got one second hand a couple years ago, will tree squirrels and coons. Picking up a puppy in January and plan to train for blood trailing

Don’t think you have to spend much money on a squirrel dog. Some of the best around are muts.
The best squirrel dog I ever hunted with was an old retired Black & Tan coondog named Boots. He needed a ramp to walk up into the truck, but he was the GOAT.

I'm always happy to see anybody wanting to get into any form of hunting with dogs. Tree dogs is my favorite.
Get a dog and a gun and a place to hunt and go.
Just get yourself some kind of treeing dog and a copy of "walk with wick" and "water dog" and go from there. The wick book is written towards coon hounds, which is exponentially harder for a dog to be good at than squirrel hunting, but it's still a good tree dog book. Water dog is written towards retrievers but is a great general working dog book as well.
A rich man can spend a ton on a finished squirrel hammering machine and have a good time. A broke kid can get a mutt from the pound and have a good time. It isn't hard to find a dog that'll tree squirrels. Hardest part is finding a place that has squirrels and a buddy to go with.

Squirrel hunting is the best. Hope I'm lucky enough to get some grandkids to take.

Tree dogs can be expensive or cheap. I have a dog being tried out for sale and have only asked 800 whereas two years ago I could have sold it for 1600. ITs a matter of what do you want out of the dog.

Just dont go hunting with somebody who has a great dog with a great place to hunt, and expect to go grab a dog out the pound dump him on shitty land and have the same thing happen. Fun, serviceable dogs are fairly easy to find. Truly great tree dogs are once in a lifetime if you're lucky for someone with a working man's budget and schedule.
You have to enjoy hunting with dogs, and all of the bullshite that goes with it, to enjoy having your own tree dog.

Porter came from a Ladner dog, seemed to know squirrel and hog from birth. Damn smart dogs.

I had feist that was incredible. He came from a long line of hunting dogs. I never had to do anything with him. He just knew what to do. That little dude would climb a tree like a coon trying to get at them. RIP miss you brother. FYI- they are also escape artists. He knocked up every female in a 10 block radius.

Got a mutt at the house that’s the best squirrel/coon dog I’ve ever had. He’s 17 years old now. When I get guns out I have to hide because he still wants to go. He was the same way about knocking females up. Wasn’t big as nothing but man his seed was strong because puppies always came out looking like him. He actually just came back from a 3 week bender chasing tail. Guess you never get too old to chase females. Honestly wasn’t expecting him to come back this time.

I had a Black Lab that was a good squirrel dog.He didn’t bark on the tree but he hunted close so it wasn’t a problem. He would stand up on the tree and there would be a squirrel.

Same with coons. So many oaks have been harvested coupled with so much land that is now posted it’s hard to find quality places to hunt that you actually can traverse somewhat easily. In Lincoln Parish the good oak bottoms are all but gone. I guess it’s all in where you live. Coon hunting or squirrel hunting in the Mobile and Baldwin county areas is the same way as Lincoln Parish. There are some good forest if you travel by boat on the rivers but the alligators around here are bad about eating your dog. I’m a big fan of hunting with working dogs. Squirrel, coon, rabbit, duck, quail, fox, they all are fun with dogs. When I was young I owned two UKC Grand Night Champions blue ticks. I’ve had friends that owned jam up squirrel dogs and that’s a blast. Currently I’m just hunting GSP on quail and pheasant. But if I lived in the right area I’d have a lot of different hunting dogs. A pack of beagles rabbit hunting is fun. My buddy up in Ruston, LA owns some of the best fox dogs in the country but that’s just not my cup of tea. It’s still a blast but my least favorite.
OP I mean this with all sincerity. If you have the forest to support squirrel hunting with a dog I’d be all over that. It’s so much fun. Kids love it too.
