Hunt mostly rice field with BIG spreads. I'm trying to see what the best combination of species is. Our spread is something like this:

30% Mallards
20% teal
20% grey ducks
15% spoonies
15% pintail (usually off alone)

Should I use a different species make up? Any particular grouping strategies?

This thread isn't only for rice fields. We can talk other waterfowl landscapes as well.

What y'all got?

I start big, then whittle down through the year.

Open with 5-8 dozen mallards
2 dozen teal
dozen pintails
dozen random (black jacks/greys/old decoys painted brown)

Usually down to 2 dozen mallards and dozen teal by 2nd split.

Exception: On front days I will bring out the whole spread again to mimic a bunch of new birds in the area.

99% public land timber or fields, and it is walk-in access.

A dozen Banded Mallard foam shells
6-8 teal
2 wood ducks

If the area is right and I can use my wheeler, I will use my canada shells as well.

anywhere from 200-500 windsocks for geese

Few dozen mixed mallards, teal and pintail for rice fields

Dozen teal and a few pintail drakes in the marsh

Where do you hunt? Rice fields?

All over. Public lakes, I've been on leases some years, friends leases.

That's just my general line of thinking about how to use decoys. I hunt with a lot of other people's set ups too, so I've seen it all both work and fail. I'm a big believer in picking some up or moving them around if it's not going well. That can make a difference sometimes.

75% greys, 15% divers and pouldeau, and 10% teal.

I normally hunt with like 3.5 dozen in the first split depending on how the birds act. Most of the time, I'm down to about a half dozen greys by the end of the second split.

You sound like my MS twin. I typically do more wood ducks though, and my mallards are inflatable rather than foam shell (which i've been trying to find a dozen of for a while now). Same locations though.

Moved to OK and the predominant species is mallards, grays and green wing. Last year hunted 12-24 mallards, 6 grays, 6 wigeon, 6 pintail and 12 gwt.

This year, totally changing the game plan. We saw lots of Canadas last year but they never came into our spread till I bought 4 goose floaters. This year I'll likely be running 16 goose floaters, 6-8 mallards (6 magnum drakes with flocked heads, 2 magnum hens) and maaaaybe 1 dz gwt if they're really thick in the area, although in my limited experience with them, teal love goose decoys. Hopefully this gives me more chances at geese without affecting my duck numbers.

There is one hole I hunt that is heavy gray duck and gwt, and that's what I'll run when I hunt that specific hole.

That's what I've read. Hoping it holds some truth.

I have inflatables too, the ones with the hard plastic heads. The shells are sooooo much lighter, and can take a shot to the face with no ill effects.
I carry my whole spread in a Drake backpack.
