Does anyone here have any outfitter recs for free range/ low fence hill country exotics? Looking to hunt sometime in the spring. Not interested in sitting in a stand with a guide. Also not interested in trophy fees. Thanks!

Can you be flexible? Lol. I saw ur user name and had to type that. You have to be a Devil. Seriously, I have hunted all over Texas for exotics and not many outfitters are gonna keep them behind anything other than a high fence. However I know the King Ranch does in fact do some free range hunts. I think it’s mostly for Nilgai but maybe some Axis too.

Ha, Teufelhunden for sure! You too?

I read something about some free-range exotics on an old hunting forum that got me interested, but the last post was 2013.

Not really looking for a trophy, but some added freezer meat and variety hunts for the kids would be cool. The high fence turns me off…not that there’s anything wrong with it!

Cold snaps in recent years has killed off a good many exotics.

I saw an Axis feeding on the I-10 shoulder near Sonora a few weeks ago. No trophy fee required.

Good luck, there isn't a lot roaming in free range low fence areas to begin with and the freeze of Feb 2021 killed off a lot. I know of a few that are roaming around the New Braunfels area, mainly in gated subdivisions. If you don't want to spend a lot of money your best bet is to hunt an Axis doe and just talk with the guide and see if you can so a spot and stalk.

Find you an outfitter in Utopia, TX for roaming Axis. There are some high fence and low fence places in the area, but honestly, you hit the main drag going 60 at night and there is a solid chance you take one out with your truck.

Nilgai can be hunted in certain refuges. I'm not very read up on the matter but I know the draws have tough odds.

link about nilgai wildlife refuge hunts

Good luck on no trophy fees if you are hunting around most of Texas on private land.

Mulie Mike with WTHO
Maynard Creek Outfitters
Martin Hollow
The axis and black buck did take a hit, but the are rebounding well and these 3 Outfitters are continuing to put quality animals down.

Yea I knew they were from up that way. He runs a good outfit. I've never personally hunted with him, but I've heard nothing but good things.

Very few ranches will turn you loose without a guide watching what you shoot.

I wouldn't rule out a large high fence. Hill country exotics is majority high fence properties.

Martin Hollow has some really good ranches to hunt and they have found a niche with the free range exotics. Past that, Judd and his dad are sketchy as they come. I wouldn’t recommend them. There are reasons they moved out of north Louisiana.

How are they sketchy? I'm not saying they aren't, just curious.

Well, I’ve hunted with them. Ranch was exceptionally good, but they were very disconnected from us and acted like they were doing us a favor. Judds dad is a nut and you can confirm that with old timers from Monroe to Tensas (didn’t know this til after the trip and a wtf happened out there moment). He made our trip terrible. If it wasn’t for the ranch being loaded, I would have packed up after the 1st day. The rest of the guys I hunt with felt the same and are well known families from North Louisiana. Hunts like that is why I feel as compelled to give them such a shitty review on here. And to be clear, it was plenty more to the story, but I’ll spare the OB the details.

Gotcha. I used to hunt their family land up here with Judd's cousin. They didn't too much like the fact that we were out there. Never figured out how they got out to Texas running such a guide service.

Interesting. I've talked to Judd a few times on the phone. Seemed like a good ol boy. I knew the hunting and properties they have were some of the best out there and they shoot some absolute giant axis.

The cousin that moved back to Hattiesburg? I know him, good dude.
Truthfully, I think Judd has good intentions majority of the time. But between his dad and some other issues. It can be a circus.
