I plan on taking a trip down to the SC coast for a day next week to catch blue crab and shrimp. I was wondering what is the best way to keep the blue crab while driving back home. I live about 2 1/2 hours from the coast, so it isn't a terribly long time to travel. Would sitting them on ice work or just throw them in a dry cooler? TIA

For only a couple hours, they will be fine in an ice chest with no ice. To be on the safe side, you could open the drain plug and put a wet towel over them to keep them wet and cool.

Crabbers crab all day in the South LA sun and dont ice crabs down. Put them in a crate and cover it with a burlap sack and wet the sack. In 70 degreee weather they will stay alive for 8-10 hours possibly more. You Dont Need Ice. Just keep them out of direct sunlight.

put a layer of ice on the bottom, put a newspaper barrier then place the crabs ontop. Leave the plug out the ice chest so the water can drain

key thing is not to let them sit in water or ice, as they will drown. So bag of ice on bottom, burlap, crabs on top. all keeps them cool while not drwoning them.

South Carolina will be plenty cool enough, no ice needed. If you put them in an ice chest make sure the lid is cracked so they can get oxygen...
