Trim material for closet - MDF, poplar, or pine?

I'm building closet shelving and trying to decide on material for trim. The shelves and carcasses are made with 3/4" plywood and I'm planning to use simple 3/4" (~2 1/2" or so) trim with rounded edges.
I bought MDF and was planning to rip the sheets, but now am having seconds thoughts. Should I go with poplar or pine instead?
These will be fastened with glue and 18 gauge nails, then painted.

1x4 pine or radiata ripped in half. If you want rounded edges, use radiata and put the factory edge down so the ripped edge is flush with the top of the plywood shelves. Birch plywood for the shelves?

I've always liked using poplar as it machines really well.
MDF would likely do ok but not sure if it would do too well with wood glue.

Yes. I'm a little concerned with the rounded MDF edges being fuzzy and having to treat them with varnish or thinned glue before priming.
Standing in the store I couldn't get past the cost savings of ripped MDF vs poplar or even pine. I'm going to need 175 lf or so.

Why don't you just edge band the plywood?

I'd like a thicker look, and it would be nice to match the shaker style cabinetry in the house.

I think it will really depend on the type of glue you're planning on using.

Gotcha, in that case I'd go with #1 clear pine or poplar. Check out the mom-n-pop lumber stores, around here they are cheaper than the big boxes on hardwood. Have you considered ripping the birch ply into strips and banding that? Drawback would be that you could not round the edges.

They do sell mdf in 12" and 16" wide pcs and up to 16ft long lengths. That's what most of the current custom closet contractors use. Then they will use a 1x2 on the front side for support and strength.

I used 1x2 pine for trim and it worked fine and was cheap. 2 1/2" seems awful big for trim.
