I make my own skirts for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and bass jigs (mainly blacks and/or dark brown with a color or two for pitching/flipping, but some baitfish colors for swim jigs). What are some off the wall color combos you have had good success with? You can only do so many variants of white/pearl, chartreuse, chart/white, black w/red/orange/purple/blue and greens (pumpkin/green pumpkin/watermelon). Imagination is the only limit on what I can make. But, I only really have confidence in about 6 or 8 general color combos. Tell me something crazy that you have actually caught a bunch of fish on. I love few things more than pulling out a lure that gets laughed at only to later get asked if I have another one of them they can use.

When you say red/fire, do you mean primarily black with some red? I have black with red flake and red with red flake variants, but heavy on the black. When I say strands, I am talking about a piece of silicone skirt material 5/32” wide. I use 8 on a standard sized bait’s skirt and six on a compact or finesse jig. Typically i will do 5 strands black/red flake, two strands gay/purple flake, one strand red/red flake. On black/blue jigs I do the same with blake/blue flake, gray/purple and blue/blue flake.

Are you talking about an almost all red? I have not been able to bring myself to buy bubblegum skirt material even though I love a bubblegum trick worm.

Yes, there's a few variations out there, so I did not know what to call it. Like this,

There is an ugly brown and orange humdinger I used 1 day. Went fishing with a buddy and just brought an old tackle bag. Lost the bait I was using and that was the only other spinnerbait I had. Proceeded to catch everything. Never happened again.

Great color. But it doesn’t take much orange to overpower it. I really like a green pumpkin/watermelon/brown pumpkin with a few strands of orange.

Here is my version of the orange/red. I couldn’t resist putting a little black/red flake and translucent pink/blue flake.

And the pumpkin/green pumpkin/watermelon/orange. I bet it would catch a fish just about anywhere.

Give me some more ideas, I would have never done orange/red but it looks like it might work.

Something similar to the top two? Top one is Black/gold flake - blue/blue flake -watermelon candy - orange pumpkin. One under it is black/blue flake - grey/purple flake - orange/orange flake.

I do a lot with orange, but typically the watermelon/browns/green pumpkin/black like shown under them.

And yes, color is much more important to fishermen than the fish.

A new to me skirt color this year is natural craw/ blue glimmer. It is the shiny blueish/purple color with black flakes. It is iridescent and changes colors. It combined with a mainly black or black/dark brown jig with a hint of blue or purple is my new favorite color.

I tied football jigs for a minute and liked multiple contrasting colors against a pumpkin/watermelon colored base, bright blue/orange/purple/pink/chartreuse etc. Adding a couple strands of all highlights and shows the movement of the skirt, felt like it built some depth into it, at least that’s how I rationalized it.

Especially considering the results of the two(at least) studies done on bass. They see red and green well, yet chartreuse is same as white and blue isn't seen well. It's essentially the same as black.

Back in the 80’s, Strike King made a chartreuse with red tips skirted spinner bait. It was a real bass catcher in the spillway pre-Andrew. Miss those days.

The blue is same color for sure. The orange I’m talking about is kinda bright. Think Delta Lures makes them.

The pink/bubble gum went viral after the Classic when Lee went off using a pink/bubblegame jackhammer

As far as skirts I'd just emulate whatever Jackhammer and Dirty Jigs are using

Does anyone know how many skirt colors Davis Jigs and Dirty Jigs offer? If you count Mark’s exclusives has to be over 100 each.

Thus is what I was thinking when reading through the thread.

Maybe do 3/4 chartreuse and 1/4 fire red if you can’t dye the tips red?
