Anyone know where I can get some used railroad ties? Want to use them for landscaping.

If you do find some make sure to wear a respirator if you plan on cutting them.

Also, if using them to border a garden you plan on eating out of, it would probably be a very good idea to line the inside of the ties with some heavy plastic to help keep that creosote from leaching into your garden soil.

Makes sure you wear long pants if cutting with chain saw. That creosote will put a rash on your skin...1st hand experience.

Well, you should be wearing jeans and long sleeves regardless while using a chainsaw

I have cut firewood in shorts and barefoot before. Think I started with tennis shoes on but they were just getting packed with sawdust so I got rid of them. Not everyone abides by your rules.

Keep in mind you have cross ties and bridge ties. Bridge ties make great soil retention walls if you have a tiered landscape. Keep in mind however, they are very heavy.

There’s a place north of Port Allen that sells them

There is a bunch of them laying next to the tracks on Central Ave. in Jefferson.

If they are halfway decent the railroad reuses them. Dont be stupid and end up a thief. Just go buy some. They arent much and will be in better condition most likely.

Don’t use for landscaping
Will leach into your bed soil and ruin it

Solid advice, according to my uncle who worked for the railroad, those used ties piled up go to a contractor. He could not get me any, and he strongly advised against helping myself to piles next to the railroad.

1- Thought I heard it was a federal crime to steal from a RR, tracks crossing state lines and all, who knows.
2- The Huey P used to have a sale periodically, but they were those 18x18 or whatever.
3- the whole creosote thing is real.
Good luck.

I would be very cautious of using creosote wood. I’ve heard of people having immediate respiratory issues after cutting on them. Serious issues. Creosote is some nasty stuff

They definitely wear down equipment, but I've never had problems other than burned skin after cutting a bunch with a chainsaw, Sawzall, and drilling plenty of holes. It really only burns my face.
I can see it being a problem if you go at them with a circular saw
