When I started dropping deer off to Van, he was processing deer in the back of his parents country grocery store. It all took off from there, developing the best deer processing business in Mississippi. People would come from other states to get Vans smoked deer sausage made. Van also developed a tremendous sporting goods store along with the deer processing. For years, you could deal directly with Van and get a gun deal that couldn’t be beat. I understand that he was 64 years old and do not know cause of death.

Dang I hate to hear that. I was just in there yesterday, it sure has grown the past few years, they have a great selection of just about anything hunting and fishing.

I lived in MS for 8 years and used Vans every year. Hands down the best deer sausage I've ever eaten. RIP.

Man I hate this. I love that store. My brother lives in Brandon and I go in there every time I go to see him. Wish I had a place like that around here.

Is that the place that runs 24/7 during deer season?

Sad to hear this. It’s one of my sons favorite places.Ive seen him in the store many times but didn’t realize who he was. We visit Van’s fairly often and have a trip planned in a few weeks to Christmas shop. Will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers. RIP

Not sure if they run 24/7, but they recently built a separate building for processing and you just pull under a covered area to unload.

Heart attack or blood clot. Didn't show up for work yesterday so someone went to check on him.

Sad deal. His sausage has been imitated throughout the state, but very few could rival it.

Does he have kids or family that will carry it on?

No telling how much inventory is sitting on the sporting goods side at any given time, but especially going into Christmas.

Also read that he was the only person there that had FFL, so they had to shut the gun counter down? Can’t imagine that would be correct?

I loved bullshitting with him at the gun counter

Was curious about this as well. Hope so. Love going in there and looking around and inevitably buying something I don't need.

I live in Brandon and frequent the store. It’s the best sporting good store and processor I’ve ever seen. I would frequently show my kids Van working (stocking shelves/working gun counter) every time we went in because he was such an excellent example of what working your entire arse off can bring you. I hate to hear this news. I

Agree. Van's is the best I've ever had. Dave's custom meats in Vicksburg is excellent too, if you can afford it. Rip Van.

shite, they’re all high now… I can tell you many NOT to go to…. That being said, another one that’s good is Milner’s in bumfrick Yazoo County. If you’re a Hawaiian sausage eater, ask them to back off the pineapple a little and double the pepper jack and you’ll get damn close to Van’s.

Has a son. Let's just say the son is not the equal of the father and leave it at that .
