My dad is looking for something new. He doesnt want a 45/70 or a 35 whelen. What are the other options in? Pros/Cons
Posted on 10/19/15 at 8:45 am to oleyeller
.444, 20 gauge slug, 10 gauge slug, 12 gauge slug, .45-70, .35 whelen
Here are rules for Louisiana
1. Rifles or pistols, .44 caliber minimum, or shotguns 10 gauge or smaller, all of which must load exclusively from the muzzle or cap and ball cylinder, use black powder or approved substitute only, take ball or bullet projectile only, including saboted bullets, including primitive firearms known as “in line” primitive firearms, and
2. Single shot, breech loading rifles, .35 caliber or larger having an exposed hammer that uses metallic cartridges loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. All of the above may be fitted with magnified scopes.

Wait, you can't shoot buck shot with a 12 gauge crack barrel during "primitive" season?

didnt think could shoot buck shot

You can, I just find slugs to be more effective. Hell, carry both and use buckshot within 40 yards and slugs beyond.

I'm sure .444 will kill a deer just fine. Slugs have been killing deer for a long time too, but do a little reading first on them. Saboted slugs are really accurate these days but need to be shot from a dedicated rifled slug barrel, and non saboted slugs can be picky about chokes and barrel length.
Why is he not interested in 45/70 or 35 whelen?
ETA; not sure if you are considering a muzzle loader but that's always an option. I just moved away from using one though and am not their biggest fan.

he had a 45-70 and just didnt care for it. Not sure why, but the place he hunts is small, maybe 40-50yards shot max so he dont want a 35

Well he really can't go wrong with a 40 yard shot, but I'm in the same boat so I'll give you my thinking on what I chose. If he didn't like the 45-70 he might not like the .444. My issues with muzzle loaders are they have not gone boom a couple times on me, but it was usually my fault in one way or another. Personally, I would steer him away from buckshot. It's tempting at that range but I've personally shot a doe broad side at 10 ft with 12ga buckshot, hit centermass, and watched her run another 100 yards before falling. Draw that out to 40 yards, and that's a much longer tracking job with a shitty blood trail. I use a 35 whelen because I don't get a ton of chances and I want the deer down. I would have him look at a dedicated slug gun though, it sounds like a good compromise.

Lets step back a little bit. Before "primitive caliber season" we had muzzle loader season. Most muzzle loaders shot a 44 caliber sabot bullet of around 240 grains at about 1600 feet per second. Guess what a 44 mag does out of a single shot rifle? 240 grain bullet (the exact same one that goes in the sabot) at 1600 fps. No one argued that a "50 cal" MZ was under powered.
Bottom line is a 44 cal single shot rifle is equivalent to the MZ we previously shot. It still makes an excellent weapon out to around 150 yards without kicking too badly. The bigger calibers , such as 45/70, 444, or 35 Whelan give you more range with increased recoil but are not needed to cleanly kill a deer out to 150 yards.
My 87 year old dad hunts with a 44 cal single shot and kills his deer every year without getting pounded by recoil. 44 mag makes a very sensible "Primative weapon".

.35 Remington all the way. (if you can find the ammo.)

.35 rem or .44 mag would be my choices. I'm not a big fan of getting my shite racked every time I pull the trigger to shoot a damn swamp donkey.

I agree. My dad and I each have one and I use mine as a 'loaner' during the regular season. All my kills were 40-70 yards, but it absolutely knocks them dead. At that distance it is no different than the 270, except the bullet hole is cleaner.

Reading this thread is leading me to believe 44 mag is much lighter in the kick department. I don't have any experience with it, sounds like that might be the way to go for OP's dad.

In a long gun it isn't bad at all. It's much less violent than ..35 welen/45-70/.444/.500s&w/slugs

Everyone kinda hates on the 444, but that's what I went with.
Not as much range as the 35, but a lot less arse whipping on the shooters end compared to 35 and 45-70.

For all in tents and porpoises, .444 and .45/70 are identical. They both just launch big hunks of lead and copper in rainbow arches
