What is the smallest caliber bullet you'd use on big Alaskan Moose?

Maximum distance of about 200 yards. This also includes a grizzly/brown bear that you may happen upon while hunting said moose.
In before .243 / 6.5 Creedmoor

The smallest I'd use is the biggest damn one I could get my hands on.

I know guys who take them with a .270.

moose and brown bear are completely different
for a moose, many have been killed with a .243, they die pretty easily, if it were just a moose hunt I would probably go with 300 win mag, could be done with much less
when you add a brown bear into it, I would step it up, most of the guides I came in contact up there carried 375 h&h, i decided on a 338 win mag, dropped a trophy bull moose at 150 yards, friend used same gun the next year and did the same, I have never shot a bear with it though
keep in mind in Alaska to hunt brown bear (as a non resident) you have to be accompanied by a guide

Whatever my deer rifle is with premium bullets. They aren't known for running out of the county after they're shot like elk are.

.458 win mag or bigger

You shouldn't decide your moose rifle based on blasting brown bear. Even for hunting brownies people use .30-06 and up. Carry spray. Your guide will have a big arse rifle.

The Native's commonly use the .223/5.56 but then again, they shoot a convenient moose that wanders into camp where they can shoot it at 20 steps right into the heart.
I'd likely use my regular deer rifle. Throw the bear in there and you've got a different deal. I'd want a bit more kinetic energy, but given the 200 yard distance, I'd likely use the .35 Whelen I already have.
Just saw the above comments and agree, Moose hunt with your deer gun and good bullets, let the guide worry about the bear.
IF its also a bear hunt, see above.

I personally used .308 (165 grain)
I know of some natives that use .223, but really only out of necessity rather than preference. .223 usually saved for caribou.
ETA: Guide should have 45-70 or something heavier with him for a surprise bear encounter

.270 and up. 165gr. are better. They don't have a really dense flesh so most stronger whitetail style calibers will do the trick. Maybe higher end on the gr you shoot and that's about it. They also don't have the stamina of whitetail. You make a good shot and they aren't going far at all.

Kinda what I was thinking - just in case a big arse bear was stalking me. Better to have and not need than the opposite.

F150 with brush guard seems about right
there is no sport to it and its not an animal that you need to hunt, its a fricking slow moving docile animal the size of a horse, why people seek to hunt them and water buffalos is just a mistery, its like going to hunt cows

#1 moose meat is delicious and one animal will fill a large chest freezer that will last you a year (not as good as caribou), #2 do you oppose people shooting Elk too? #3 Anybody in Alaska laughs at this comparison to a cow #4 A moose will frick you up x10 worse than a cow

can't you shoot it in the head?
Posted on 7/20/22 at 1:49 pm to Chad504boy
If you choose a 30-06, then you can also throw in a 308.
And a 308 is my answer to the topic question.

Just moose, minimum I would go is a 6.5 creed. Wouldn't be my first choice but I would be confident in bringing one down with a good bullet. Throwing in bears and having no alternative gun, I'm taking my 9.3x62.

200 grain Nosler partition 30 caliber. Preferably hand loaded 30-06.
