Baton Rouge area in south Louisiana.

Slightly larger than an ant. Caught my eye because of the bright red color; saw it right alongside the wall of the house in the landscaping.

Is this something I should treat the house for or should I just let it ride?

Yep. Do not pick it up, or do. You won’t forget it for damn sure.

A velvet ant is actually a flightless wasp.

They aren't like ants. There won't be a colony.

Cowkiller wasp. I stepped on one a few months ago. Had my whole leg throbbing for a few hours.

I found it again and hit it with wasp/hornet spray. Seems to have curled into a ball and stopped moving.

I grew up calling them cow ants

Rumor was they could kill a cow or something like that, if you put one on the concrete and put a 5gallon bucket on it that little bastard will push the bucket around.

They have a particular affinity with being nest predators of cicada killer wasps.

They invade the cicada killer’s burrow to lay their own eggs, which hatch and eat the larvae of the cicada killer. Or something like that.
