Looking to buy a log splitter so that I can stop buying firepit wood.

What size do I want/need?

Tractor Supply has a 25, 30, and 40 ton splitters with Kohler engines. Id prefer Honda power plant, but trying to figure out tonnage first.

Also, not locked into TS, just good for starting comparisons.

What else do I need to compare? Cycle speed? GPM pump?

I have a 25 ton and it does fine.Any log I’ve been able to wrestle under the ram I’ve been able to split.
I’ve never timed cycle speed ,it is faster than wedges and sledge hammer.
I can’t see any point in anything bigger unless you are going to go in the firewood business.

I have rented the 20ton from HD and it was a beast. I really want to buy me one but I dont have the room. I have watched the YouTubes for the 6.5ton electric Wen and it would be servicable for home firewood.

Just rent one from HD or ASA, seems the way to go

Why buy one this year?

Just drive around and get all you want from peoples yards.

I bought a 5 ton Ryobi Electric log splitter for $199 from Home Depot about 10 years ago. Its been plugged in sitting next to by wood pile since I bought it. It's slow but will split most anything that will fit on the splitter. Occasionally you will get a log with some knots that it will not split. There are reviews on youtube.

We have either a 20 or 30 ton from Tractor Supply that is probably 20 years old. Fired it up last weekend and split no problem. We probably split 3-4 cords a year.

Just beware towing it - those tiny tires and relatively light weight are disaster waiting to happen on the highway.

People have no sense of humor anymore.

There are stacks of perfect sized fire pit wood (a lot of non-pine) all up and down Hwy 22...on the side of the road...waiting for state pick up.

Free...and good to go.

I have a yardmax 28 ton splitter . It handles oak, pecan, etc without any trouble. I split 2 cords with it Sunday . I bought it on the log splitters direct website. They shipped quick and had a good
price. I’d recommend them. Log splitters direct

I am in the same boat as you and have been looking for a while. I will probably just end up renting this year but just got turned onto Kinetic splitters, I may pull the trigger on a smaller kinetic this spring.

After reading this thread I found myself going back down the log splitting rabbit hole…

Man, that is one of the most satisfying videos I've watched in months. That 8-way is ingenious.
