What to fill low spots in grass yard with?

I have some low spots in my yard (st augustine grass) and was wondering what to fill it with that the grass will grow through eventually. I live in Lakeview in New Orleans in case that helps.

No soil / sand mix? Just straight sand?

I have always been told to do a mixture. 50-50. Definitely sand and either soil/fertilizer. I know golf courses use just sand. The theory behind it is that sand gets extremely hot, but with the weather not as bad as of late you should be ok. It definitely won't hurt to use both though speaking from first hand experience.

River sand is fine. You can "broadcast it" with a shovel to cover a large area, or drop it in a low spot and kind of rake it to work it down.
Look up "topdressing" when you get a chance.

Sand with a Snicker bar wrapper on top.

Sand
Morter sand mixed with top soil. Very course sand that drains with soil that allows grass roots to develop fast.

Do NOT use river sand. It will infest your yard with Torpedo grass, for which there is no selective herbicide. Use masonry sand, and top dress with topsoil.
