I started with an Alumaweld XP50, then Xpress H51, Xpress X19, Skeeter ZX200, then finally ZX225.
The bigger boats kept me out of smaller waters, but were much more comfortable on larger lakes. So, get what you can afford to buy, afford to pull & maintain, and sized for the water you want to fish…

I recommend a small(rated for 115 or less) used aluminum boat like a Bass Tracker, Xpress or used Cajun Special. Once you've gained experience from all the dings, scratches and boat launch mishaps then move up to a glitter boat with all the bells and whistles you determine you want.

I got scratches from a nail sticking out from the landing dock on the cap of my champion years ago. $6,000 to fix it.
I agree get you a boat to learn from before sending serious money on a glass boat.

You can buy a boat to keep for your lifetime for $20k now a days, especially when all these covid boaters start selling their covid boats. One things a given is you're going to have to upgrade your electronics every few years if you're serious enough.

Where are you wanting to fish is kind of important too.
Fresh and coastal la marsh , a 16-17 ft flat boat with a 50-70 hp motor will catch a lot of fish.

Make a list of where you will fish or want to fish.
What type of storage you would like?
Large lakes you probably would appreciate a larger boat. Smaller lakes, rivers, bayous not so much.
Are you fishing by yourself or bringing other people?
How often?
Do you fish or want to fish bass tournaments?
Then from that list you can size up the length of boat you would like to buy.
Then figure out if you want new or used?
The factor in where you will store it?
What are you using to tow it?

Used 18/19 Fiberglas from a leading brand. Should be able to get a 10 year old version for 20K.

Really wish you would have started this thread a year ago. My dad literally gave away a 18.5ft Cajun with a 150 Evinrude because they were moving and he didn’t want to deal with it

I think the follow on question should be what place is best to search for a boat.
I have found that yatch world helped me a lot with my salt water boat, but for a boat your looking for and i am currently looking for is better on Facebook marketplace with the 500mile radius.
Also what kind of water are you trying to fish, plus how many people you trying to bring... that is pretty important factor for example i am also looking for a boat to fish 2 constantly and 3-4 with a friend bringing a kid. I want a all welded aluminum with a pretty substantial vee and a decent rail height so i can hopefully fish some chop on the bays, but also get up in some rivers and marsh with a jackplate. Wanting to get in skinny water is putting me into the 2-stroke only mindset. I have fished plenty of times off some friends 17' and it fit 3 ppl easily so it's making me consider a 17-19' bigger is normally better but i think 20-23' limits the river and shallow fishing but I doubt you will ever regret getting a bigger boat.
Get in a few boats at bass pro and see if u truly need a 22' boat you ma be happy with a well set up 15-17' boat

Yep. Big difference in needs between toledo bend and delecroix. Somewhere like toldeo bend I almost must have something big enough for the open water and with lots of range. The place is so big. For the marsh any ol rig will work just fine and you could argue that smaller is better.
My first boat was a 15' cajun bass boat with a 90 mercury and we went everywhere in that thing. It was a great bass fishing boat.

A 2002? If so, what did you get for it?
