We built our house 10 years ago and have never had stinging caterpillars. For some reason this year they are everywhere. I also have a five month old puppy that eats anything that will fit in his mouth. I can’t let him go out without first walking through the yard killing everyone that I see but I will never get them all. Luckily he’s only been popped two times.

after the hatch, most things last about a month usually, so 3-4 weeks i would say at the most

I got the bright idea to spray brush in flip flops last year, and got a saddleback under foot. There is no purpose for those creatures to exist.

Saddlebacks. I hate them things. They are always in my purple hulls when I am picking.

Springtime and walking under oak trees is a gamble in N.O. with buck moth caterpillars dropping out the trees from time to time. Those bastards lay a good sting on you just for the hell of it.

Wild. I've never seen those. Louisiana has some interesting wildlife and plantlife differences for being so close to Alabama.

Hopefully soon. My kids don't wear shoes and they are getting hammered.

Oh, you have them too.

Buck moths used to stay in the oak tree in my back yard as a kid.

Puss moths are what you really had to watch out for

It's funny, I see puss moths all the time but have never seen a puss moth caterpillar.

Ugly little things. They just look like a small, crawling hairball.

The wife and I drove to Slidell this past weekend to pick up our sister-in-law to go visit family in Hammond.

When I got out my truck I looked down at the ground and saw dozens of buck moth caterpillars crawling under the oak tree she has in her front yard. As I looked around the tree, there were several dozen along the trunk, on the limbs and on top of her Jeep parked under it.

If it were my tree, I'd not hesitate to spray it every year to keep those nasty bastards at bay.

Buck moth caterpillars are the worst. Remember growing up in mandeville and every few years they would get bad. When you step on one barefoot it’s legit fire since they get you with a ton of stingers. Also a puss moth caterpillar is the devil. If they get you you’ll prob go to the hospital. The pain is similar when someone gets a bad gout flare up and it lasts hours.
