I’m thinking of getting a dirt bike to ride trails, open off road areas - not motocross per se, with jumps. Just sems like a dirt bike would be more fun on trails than an atv.

I know lots of folks ride atvs at Tower Trax and maybe the Bonne Carre spillway, but how about dirt bikes? And where else could I ride one in the relative vicinity?

Go ahead and get a dual sport.

You can tool around on road as well. Get more use.

You can ride dirt bikes at the BC spillway. If you don't mind a drive, Kisatchie national forest has trails to ride too.

Other than those 2 places, only other ones I know of are motocross style tracks. Full Throttle Mx outside Hammond and there was a public/free track off Walker Rd in Belle Chasse. I would check the current status on those tracks to make sure they're still open though because its been a few years since I got rid of my bike.

Forest hill (Claiborne Multi-Use Trails) is the closest public place to trail ride that is more suited for dirt bikes.

I don’t believe that you have a lot of options around Baton Rouge. Everyone I know from there that rides trails, hauls up to Central Louisiana, where we have a number of great trails.

You essentially have Camp Claiborne (Woodworth/Forest Hill), Camp Livingston (Pollock; about 20 minutes north of Alexandria), Cravens/Fullerton (South of Fort Polk near Pitkin), Sandstone (between Natchitoches and Leesville) and South Toledo Bend State Park (this is the only one that is state owned. The others are all in Kisatchie National Forest).

The U.S. Forest Service has a website that tells you if the the trails are open. LINK

Keep in mind that you have to stay on the trails unless your bike is plated for street use. They will ticket you if you ride on the blacktop or fire roads. Sometimes they close for maintenance or if there has been a lot of rain. All have various loops that range from 5 miles up to about 30. If you are new to bikes, start with Camp Livingston. It is the easiest. Sandstone is probably the most challenging. An added bonus to Camp Livingston is Hurricane MX track, which is just a few minutes away. You can ride both trails and a track the same day/weekend.

The national forest trails run about $5-7 a person, while the state park is around $15. You can also buy an annual pass to the national forests, or may qualify for a free pass it you have any VA disability. Hurricane MX is around $20. The people who run it are very friendly and have a Facebook page that they keep updated.

I’m happy to answer any questions you have.

Since sarge gave you the answer you wanted I'll give the other answer if anyone else is looking for tracks to ride around Baton Rouge:

Zmans Mx- Paincourtville, LA - $40/ Day
FVF Mx- Breaux bridge, LA- $30/ Day
Desoto Mx- Desoto, LA- $25/ Day Mx
$25/ Day Trails
$30/ Day ATV
$40/ Day SxS
Down south Mx- New Iberia, LA- $25/ Day
Wildwood Mx- Tangipahoa parish, LA $35/ Day
Every 6th ride is free
Arcola Mx- Arcola, LA $30/ Day
Golden pine Mx- Pervis, MS $30/ Day
Hurricane creek Mx- Jena, LA $20/ Day
Hammond Mx- Hammond, LA $30/ Day

Most of those are within 1.5 hours of Baton Rouge. Not alot of options other than Kisatichie and BC spillway if you're looking for trails. And theres always the Mississippi river levee

Is Tower Trax not a good place to ride?

I've never ridden there because I normally ride MX but I'm sure if you can find trails that dont have UTV access you'd be set. Mud riding ain't nearly as fun on two wheels as it is on four so you want to find somewhere that isn't totally destroyed

Tower Trax is not bad if it has not been raining too much. Their mud is very easy to wash off.
