Why are all good ATV brands Japanese?

Never understood this. Only US brands I know of are Arctic Cat and Polaris and they both suck arse.
You’d think we would have one quality brand made in the good ol US of A with the high demand in this country for off reading and hunting.

Why do you say Polaris "sucks arse"?
do you consider Can Am to "suck arse" even though it's Canadian and not American?

Can Am is solid but it’s canadian.
Polaris are pieces of shite. Least the 2 I owned in the past were. Did not come close to the 2 Yamahas and one Honda I had

i have a honda foreman that is fugged right now only due to the oil drain plug/pan stripped

It’s funny how diversified Japanese companies are too. Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha etc all have combinations of motorcycles, atvs, outboards, boats, and sometimes even cars especially Honda.
American companies never branched out like that. You don’t have Harley Davidson atvs or General Motors outboards. Kind of odd if you think about it

Just rethread it it’s not hard and buy a new plug

Ole Yoshi would have never crossthreaded it
You never could get it drilled out and tapped?

quote:Honda's competitive advantage has always been engine performance. They dominated small engines, which is why you see them have a presence throughout the ATV market. Motorcycles, ATVs, dirt bikes, boats, pressure washers, lawn mowers, etc, etc, etc all have something in common... a core competency in engines.
Honda
Honda then just applied that to cars, which are also primarily desirable due to high quality engines.
Suzuki & Yamaha are just competitors within that space, mostly due to proximity. This is not atypical in industry. There are numerous examples of global industries being concentrated in a specific region: Luxury cars in Italy, Performance cars in Germany, European watch manufacturers, American Trucks/muscle cars, Japanese forged golf irons, Italian purses, etc.
Specialization and reputation somewhat drive the self-fulfilling prophecy.

Did you ever determine if this was the problem?

Posted on 8/27/19 at 12:53 pm to deltaland
Not much different from the motorcycle market. Japanese mass produced motorcycles have been market leaders for a very long time.

You still never got that shite fixed?
Posted on 8/27/19 at 1:30 pm to REB BEER
Haven’t really messed w it yet and I’m not mechanically inclined neither
Posted on 8/27/19 at 2:40 pm to deltaland
Tracker (Bass Pro) makes ATVs and side by sides now. I wonder if those are any good

You don't need to be mechanically inclined to tap aluminum and put a copper insert in.
As for why American brands struggled, electronics. We can build great engines here. We can built great bearings. But, much like the Germans, or electrical engineering always seems lacking when applied offroad.
As the japanese brands push more and more component production outside of Malaysia and Japan, they are inviting more and more issues.
The brands that aren't, Suzuki, Kawasaki, anf Yamaha, all hold tiny percentages in market share.

I have a 05 Polaris Sportsman 700 Twin EFI an my only beef has been having to replace the entire axle assemblies all around but twice on the rear. The CVs would start clicking and then eventually crap out and fall apart.
I’d go Honda in the future.

The later model 800s were polaris' 300 honda. They were too well made.
And that is why they aren't made.

I'm still running a 1999 Polaris 500 Magnum and a 2009 Polaris 700XP Ranger. Neither fail to start, use any oil, and are 100% dependable.
Magnum has been running 27" Vampires all it life and the Ranger is running 28" Zilla's.
