Why are outboard motors so &%$*^$ expensive!

Seriously for the life of me I cant figure out why a new outboard is so freaking expensive! Talking to a co worker that just repowered with a 200 yamahammer last month and spent $17k by the time he bought controls, installation, etc.
Theres a decent amount of cars on the market now that you can get for less than that!
Was halfway considering re-powering my rig in a couple years, but I would spend more re-powering that I paid for the boat in the first place!

I recently had a conversation with my father about the very same thing.
He has an older xpress bass boat and was thinking of ust repowering with a new 4 stroke motor.
I have been trying to tell him to just sell the boat and get a new or newer boat altogether that is already rigged with a newer motor.

Can't answer why, but seems you'd have to have a helluva boat to make it worth repowering
packages much more economical

I have always heard around $100+ per hp on a motor.

Yeah, new outboard prices are crazy and late model ones hold their value very well. I know a guy that repowered his boat with a 250 Yammy that cost him around $20k, then his insurance dropped him because his boat had a 200 hp max.

Be thankful you're not repowering diesel inboards

quote:I've kinda got that delimma right now. I bought a used 21ft Bay boat last year with an older Johnson on it. It doesn't have a lot of hours on it, has good power, but burns a lot of fuel. I've had some minor problems with it, but most came from it setting up largely unused before I bought it. I've toyed with the idea of repowering to get a more fuel efficient and "dependable" motor, but it's just not cost effective. And from what I've heard lately, newer engines aren't as dependable as I thought.

Start your own company and start building outboards and sell them for a small profit. Mercury will buy you out promptly and you'll be able to retire.

Is this the only market that Chinese manufacturimg hasnt taken over? I know you can get small Chinese outboards, but why not larger?

Luxury item
Supply and demand
Besides, how many automotive motors will run at wide open throttle for an hour?

F that. I'd sooner take my chances on a used motor

Thats why I love my old 200hp 2 strokes. Light as hell, and only cost about 1500 to rebuild. Economy???? It's a fricking boat. There is no such thing with them.

Yep. On the 4 strokes you can just add a zero to the HP number and that's pretty much your price. But, I've wondered the same thing. I guess the market supports it, that's why. $35k for a 350

Exactly!!! The 2 stroke 25hp on my little boat...frick fuel economy.
But on bigger boats? Holeeeeeeeeey shiiiit!!! The difference between 2 and 4 stroke is HUGE!!!!

Yep. I have used a 9.9hp 4 stroke for frogging though and the fuel consumption is amazing. Like, you can putt around half the night and it looks like the line the fuel was at on the tank has not moved. Hard to even burn half a 3 gallon tank in a full night with a loaded boat.

Don't plan on ever going out that far in my boat. been out about 70mi and back before. If I'm not trying to break speed records I just run a little slower, and still get pretty good gph.
Weight, props, hull design, and setup have as much or more to do with economy as whether or not you are running 2 or 4 strokes.
