Why is there a random pocket of cougars in Florida on the species range map?

There's basically no real breeding populations in the eastern half of the lower 48 except in Florida.

The black subspecies doesn't survive in the heat down there. The yellow is showing the black panther range.

The DNR in South Carolina denied that there were cougars or bears in that state. We knew better because we saw them while working bees and hunting deer and hogs. One of the bears clawed up some supers and scratched it's claws on a tree after touching an electric fence.
Was really rough for the DNR to be taken seriously when logging trucks ran over both in a few months. One was not far from Mars Bluff.

They’re there, but not in great numbers. I’ve heard that there are only 7 known in Everglades National Park, which is a pretty expansive area.
