Great first post. We need more of that and less blaming people when the info is not known

So what do we know? Struck vessel was stationary and the other vessel was operating at a high rate of speed?

Yes. He was running wide open, cut around a point, ran into a stationary boat that was striper fishing. Still, to hit them he had to have completely not seen them either due to being distracted or they were in the blind spot caused by his electronics. Or both, they were in a blind spot AND and he was focused on his screens instead of the water in front of him. Here is/was the console of his boat. Two twelve inch units where a windshield used to be. This is the setup on most tournament bass boats now and the screens absolutely obstruct the driver’s view.

I once got pulled over and was given a ticket on Aliceville by Alabama marine police for driving with an obstructed view/careless operation of a boat because I left my front seat on the pedestal with the seat back up on the front deck while running. This was twenty years ago. Now, you can basically mount a flatscreen tv in front of you that blocks your view and they let it slide.

There is video of it so law enforcement knows exactly what happened. The fact there is apparently clear video of it from a fair ways off is proof that thick fog was not an issue.

The fact that law enforcement have not said anything for three days other than they are investigating makes me think they are dotting all their I’s and crossing all their T’s before charges are filed.

I didn’t realize until today the driver of the bass boat was only 22. I know looking back I lacked the maturity or experience to operate a boat that would run 80 mph when I was 22. Heck, I got into enough pickles with an aluminum boat that ran 30 something mph at that age, I can’t imagine what I would have done with one that ran over twice that fast.

I am pretty sure this is the point the collision occurred at. This was not taken the day of the tournament, but notice the boat fishing on the point. This is not a blind curve as several posters opined in the other thread. No, it is pretty wide open. The only way it becomes a blind spot is if someone carelessly and stupidly hugs the bank to try to cut it short. Right through a spot lots of people fish. And even someone who is not familiar with Smith but is familiar with fishing should know points are pretty popular and productive fishing spots so there might be a boat there.

The kid was in 15th place. It is conjecture on my part, just because it has happened to me, but I bet he was so focused on catching the next fish and trying to win that he just threw caution out the window. Now, because of a split second moment of either distraction or poor judgement, his professional fishing career may be over.
