Getting a 2007 150 vmax in a couple days. Anyone here have first hand experience getting a few extra horses out of them? I've seen sites where they go all out but for now I'm looking for simple stuff that does not require tearing engine apart significantly. Carbs already have to come off when I get it because they're dirty. Engine has about 300 hours and 120 psi compression on every cylinder when I tested it. Just looking for simple mods that might allow me to go up a size in pitch for instance possibly, maybe turn it into a 175. Motor is going on a 20ft Wellcraft V20 cuddy cabin.

Hydro tech in Tennessee
They make phase kits. Phase 1-2-3, higher the number, the more in depth it is. All bolt on stuff. They do the work, you gotta bring boat to them. They do it while you hang out at hotel. About 3,000 will make a 150 a 200 plus hp

I did one of those Stage kits on a 2 stroke Sea Doo. Sent in my head and carbs to be massaged. Head was shaved to bump compression. Carbs rejetted and flame arresters eliminated. First weekend out it was screaming until the head gasket/o ring blew and ruined the engine. It was and expensive lesson.

Put me down as a hell no to modifying a two stroke. They are unreliable enough stock

I'm not really looking to bump compression so much that I have to run 93 octane. These 2 strokes suck the gas down, don't need it sucking down the expensive stuff for a little extra power. I know about Hydrotech and the phase kits they sell. I should clarify I'm looking for a couple of free mods if any are available for a bump in power.

For example, I have an old Tohatsu 2 stroke 25. It's easily turned into a 30hp by changing out a carb gasket that has a restrictor built into the gasket. Also a timing bump by advancing a few degrees and you now have the 30 hp. Appreciate you pointing out Hydrotech, would definitely take that route if I needed to tear it down for a rebuild or some other involved repairs

Why not just buy a 175?

Because the deal is right on the 150 the neighbor has down the street. The 150 175 and 200 are all the same block bore and stroke. Wondering if anyone had first hand experience with these engines to make a few simple quick and cheap improvements. Eventually I'll stock up on some junkyard parts if I really need the extra power.

If this holds true, 9/10 you would just have to search the different part numbers between the 150 and 200. Good chance it’s just carbs, reed blocks and exhaust tuner.

Open it up more air bigger carbs ... I don’t know about the ecm on the 2007 if you can but the timing will help a ton

I got this one.

Boyesen power reeds are the first, and maybe last, mod you need to do. Nothing else will give you more bolt-on bang for the buck.

After that, more HP gets expensive: ECM, jetting, grind the cages, bigger carbs, skim the heads, exhaust manifold.

Just threw in the reeds when you clean the carbs and call it a day.

What’s the boat used for? Seems dumb to dump money into an older 2 stroke motor that will be used to push around an old wellcraft.

I've used Boyesen dual stage reeds on dirt bikes before. Haven't put them in an outboard before but do they last as long as the factory steel reeds? On bikes they give a little better throttle response I've noticed. Not looking to sink alot of money into it, just looking for parts that I can use if I come across any at a yard. The boat will be for fishing and cruising around in. Motor is in good shape with under 400 hours

That makes more sense I guess. Those old wellcraft v20 are some bullet proof boats. I’ve got a friend whose parents have a v20 and they are on their 3rd repower and that boat is bullet proof. It’s a great booze crusin boat.

I got the boat for a song with trailer. The transom was recently re done and the boat has always been kept under cover. Far as I can tell, no rot. I would have loved to repower with a 200 etec, 150 4 stroke Merc, or a Yammie 4 stroke but the prices are just too much for the amount of hours I'll be using it. Yeah I live on the water but still can't find the time to be out as much as I'd like to be so this is why I am where I'm at with it
