Son just sent me a picture of a black bobcat that his friend shot. First one I had ever heard of.

Apparently they are pretty rare.

First time for me. That would freak me out if I saw it in the woods. I’d be swearing I saw a black panther.

Not so sure that's a housecat. I see brown spots and look at the size of those feet. Looks like a juvenile bobcat to me.

Apparently the game warden checked it out and said it was the first one he had ever seen. The spotting on the front shoulder definitely looks bobcat.

Would not have been my choice either. I don't know the backstory on it. Could have been killing chickens or maybe he just thought it would be a cool mount. If it indeed is a house cat it may have just been an a-hole.

It's called melanism. Many different species can have it but it is rare. I have gone down a rabbit hole a time or 2 looking at all the different species that can have a melanistic phase. Apparently bobcats are really rare.

He gonna mount it? It would definitely look super cool with the right taxidermist doing it.
