Alabama baws, answer a question about transporting a firearm in a vehicle.

I remember reading a couple years ago about how arse-backwards your laws about transporting a firearm in a vehicle was.
Something about having the firearm and ammunition separated, basically only legal to have an unloaded firearm and the ammunition in the trunk or back of the vehicle. Illegal to have a loaded firearm in a vehicle.
Is that still enforced?

If you have a CCL you can carry as you like.

You can drive around with a loaded gun. A vehicle is considered an extension of your home. I would be forthcoming with that information if you are pulled over.

We do not have a CCL law anymore. That is now dead. You can conceal carry without a license.

I don't know where that came from, because it's never been that way here.

It use to be you had to have a concealed carry permit to have a gun in your car. It was a weird interpretation of what concealment meant. Law was changed a few years ago. No CC needed.

That's Illinois.

CARRY IN VEHICLE? Can you carry a concealed handgun in a vehicle in Alabama?

Yes. As of January 1, 2023, Alabama does not require a permit or license to carry a loaded handgun in any vehicle.
WTF Alabama? I was shocked when I read this years ago. I never followed the law as I drove to Florida several times with a loaded pistol in the vehicle.

That's how I've always done it.
If a cop pulls me over, I go ahead and tell him I have a weapon right up front, then you don't have any issues.

That would be a year and 2 months.

Firearm had to be unloaded and ammo separated and not easily accessible. fricking ridiculous.
Glad y’all figured that out.

No, somebody is misinterpreting shite.
It was never illegal to have a loaded firearm in your vehicle in Alabama.
Edit: Exclude Wildlife refuges. They will mess you up if you have any gun there, with the exception of Muzzle loader season.

I still think it’s 2023 apparently.

If it wasn’t, why does it say, “As of January 1, 2023?” That means it wasn’t legal until then.

It definitely was that way though. If you didn’t have a CCL, the ammunition had to be separated from the firearm and the firearm could not be within arms reach. Didn’t necessarily have to be in the trunk, but could not be reachable. If you had a CCL, you could have it loaded and located wherever you wanted.
The elimination of the permit requirement did away with that.

I remember being a little nervous about being stopped by a cop in AL when passing through.

There was never a requirement for it to be unloaded. It had to be in a case or out of reach unless you had a ccw permit.

Can you imagine, “Hold on Mr. Carjacker, just let me crawl into the back seat and load my pistol first, then you can have my car and my money.”

If I remember correctly, it was unloaded and ammo separated.
