Orleans Parish Assessor Erroll Williams has rallied behind a bill that seeks to lower the amount of annual property taxes Louisiana homeowners pay each year.

House Bill 271, filed by Rep. Matthew Willard D-New Orleans, calls for raising the state's homestead exemption from $75,000 to $125,000 of a home’s market value, a move aimed at bringing relief to property owners grappling with soaring insurance costs and higher property taxes.

Williams, who is up for reelection this fall, said the exemption has remained unchanged since 1980, when the average home price in the state was $43,000. He said increasing it “just makes sense.”

“I talk to homeowners every day who are struggling to keep up. This change could mean the difference between staying in their home or being priced out.” Williams said. “There’s not going to be a property tax base to fund government programs if people can’t afford to live here.”

I appreciate the effort, but that’s not high enough.

It should be eliminated altogether.

That’s the opposite of what we need. We already have half the city paying no property taxes. Everyone needs to pay so they quit voting for every increase that gets asked for.

How about a bill that makes a law stating that only actual property owners

may vote on tax/revenue bills ?.!

Because that's stupid? Just because someone doesn't own property now it doesn't mean that they'll never own property

Everyone votes on things that don't necessarily directly affect them

There should be no homestead exemption. Everyone should have skin in the game.

Desantis in Florida is trying to eliminate prop taxes.
Hopefully other states follow suit.

So if Florida succeeds in eliminating their property tax, as DeSantis has supported ( LINK), does that mean no one in Florida would have "skin in the game"?

It should be a function of the dollar's value. As inflation increases, so should taxes like that. Update it each year.

spoken like a slave. No one should be paying real estate taxes. Its bullshite. Paying for annually for land i own outright? Paying taxes on a home I own and if i dont, someone can come in and steal my home out from under me?

When your house catches on fire don't call the county.

Either or both. I hate property taxes. No one should be forced to sell their house because they can't afford the taxes on it. However, property taxes are the best way to focus the taxes on the people that benefit from the revenue. School districts, fire protection, etc. If I live in Ascension and shop at Sam's or Costco, which doesn't have any locations in Ascension, then having my sales tax revenue go to EBR programs that I'll never use is no benefit to me. Having that sales tax revenue go to maintaining the streets that I use to get there, police to make it safe to drive and shop there, etc makes sense.

All taxes should be based on consumption not simple ownership. When you buy a house you pay sales tax and never has to pay again. No one owns property in this county we are just renting...

That's why I like the exemption.

What it really means if your house is worth more than 125K you will end up paying more in taxes, while those under 125K pay less.

Well, they don’t cut spending, so the locals will just look to Baton Rouge for more cash.

We should reduce the homestead exemption, allow local govt to collect more tax, and shift spending from the state onto locals. Then cut income tax and reduce the size of state control.

Needs to go the other way. Mils taken in for a given tax are proportional to the total tax revenue needed. The more over the median house valve you are, the larger percentage of the mils you are paying.

Eliminate HE and everyone will pay in proportion to the valve.

Idiots voted it down during the last election

The legislature is going to take it away altogether, because it must not be that important to people
