Dad of teen accused of fatally stabbing Texas football rival defends son: ‘He was not the aggressor’

The tragic murder of a Texas high school football star took another troubling turn when the father of the 17-year-old arrested for the crime defended his son.

Karmelo Anthony, 17, was arrested Wednesday after allegedly stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf in the chest at a track meet. The horrific attack took place after Metcalf was told that he was sitting in the wrong seat, according to various reports.

Metcalf died in the arms of his twin brother, who was desperately trying to stop the bleeding. Hunter Metcalf rushed to his brother after he was stabbed.

Andrew Anthony insisted his son was a “good kid” in an interview with the New York Post.

“Everyone has already made their assumptions about my son, but he’s not what they’re making him out to be,” the senior Anthony said. “He’s a good kid. He works two jobs. He’s an A student, has a 3.7 GPA.”

“He was not the aggressor. He was not the one who started it,” the father insisted, adding that his son’s action was a heat-of-the-moment mistake that affected both families.

Telling someone they're in the wrong seat isn't starting a fight.

He had a hangnail problem and couldn't find dad's clippers.

can't go around stabbing people regardless. might ne hard to get a jury verdict though. they'll probably plea out but A students don't tend to be ready with a knife.

Not so sure about that. It was always a common intimidation tactic when I was in school to see if you were going to stick up for yourself or not.

I can buy a decent enough family and mostly-decent kid doing something really stupid in the heat of a dispute that leads to tragedy. Not excuse it, but understand that reasonably good kids from reasonably good families can make awful mistakes.

I don't think a stabbing a kid in the chest at a track meet at 10AM qualifies

He needed something to give him a competitive edge.

Something to shave time off his laps.

Well I guess that answers the victims dads question about parenting.

Ok…so some smack talking, chest bumping, posturing, maybe some fisticuffs?

Not taking out a knife and stabbing someone in the chest.

lol at all you high and mighty people judging this kid. Like you’ve never stabbed someone in the chest over a disagreement. Grow up.

According to a poster on a thread on the same topic in the O-T lounge, teams don't have access to locker rooms at most track meets. So these tents are de-facto locker rooms and where the kids leave their bags (with wallets, cell phones, etc). The member of the teams are understandably protective of their tents.

Sounds like staying out of tents that are not your team's tent is a widely known and adhered to practice in the track world.

I feel for the dad in this situation, and him taking up for his son is not a shock. However, unless something comes to light that really changes the circumstances, his son is a cold blooded murderer.

I don't even carry a knife on me when I'm on vacation, why he's carrying a knife for a sports event needs some explaining. You're either carrying it for self defense, or because you're an impulsive piece of shite looking for violence.
