Cysteine is a semi-essential amino acid.

It’s considered semi-essential because your body can produce it from other amino acids, namely methionine and serine. It becomes essential only when the dietary intake of methionine and serine is low.

Cysteine is found in most high-protein foods, such as chicken, turkey, yogurt, cheese, eggs, sunflower seeds and legumes.

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a supplement form of cysteine.

Consuming adequate cysteine and NAC is important for a variety of health reasons — including replenishing the most powerful antioxidant in your body, glutathione. These amino acids also help with chronic respiratory conditions, fertility and brain health.

Top 9 Benefits of NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)

NAC was first approved by the FDA as a respiratory drug in 1963. It’s also used to prevent serious liver damage from acetaminophen poisoning. But it’s been available in dietary supplement products for decades – the ingredient itself is likely safe for most people. The FDA has pushed back on the use of NAC in supplements since 2010, but it’s ramped up significantly this year. Some speculate this is due to new clinical investigations into the use of NAC for COVID-19. The FDA claims that there’s no evidence that NAC was used as a supplement prior to its use as a drug – so including NAC in a supplement makes the product an unapproved drug and thus illegal.

N-Acetyl Cysteine: Supplement, Drug, or Both?

Why the sudden push? Well this comment on a Reddit thread about it sums it up pretty well IMO

45 plus years of being used as a health supplement and suddenly it's shown to help prevent / treat CV19 so it gets ripped off shelves and required a prescription during the same time billions of dollars are being spent to bribe people into getting the Vxx... Idk something doesn't sit right i've never heard of needing a prescription for an amino acid

They don't want you to self-medicate using Ivermectin, Hydroxychloroquine, NAC, or anything else. You must comply and get the Vax.

NAC is incredibly benign. I have no clue what legitimate reason the FDA would have to take this out other than to prevent degenerates like me from thinking they can drink more booze if they eat NAC tablets.

BTW the 9 benefits of NAC seem pretty awesome with little risk

quote:

1. Essential for Making the Powerful Antioxidant Glutathione
2. Helps With Detoxification to Prevent or Diminish Kidney and Liver Damage
3. May Improve Psychiatric Disorders and Addictive Behavior
4. Helps Relieve Symptoms of Respiratory Conditions
5. Boosts Brain Health by Regulating Glutamate and Replenishing Glutathione
6. May Improve Fertility in Both Men and Women
7. May Stabilize Blood Sugar By Decreasing Inflammation in Fat Cells
8. May Reduce Heart Disease Risk by Preventing Oxidative Damage
9. Ability to Boost Glutathione Levels May Improve Immune Function

Side Effects

NAC is likely safe for adults when provided as a prescription medication.

However, high amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation (47Trusted Source).

When inhaled, it can cause swelling in the mouth, runny nose, drowsiness and chest tightness.

People with bleeding disorders or taking blood thinning medications should not take NAC, as it may slow blood clotting (48Trusted Source).

NAC has an unpleasant smell that makes it hard to consume. If you choose to take it, consult with your doctor first.

It’s used primarily to treat Tylenol toxicity. It can be used to treat general liver failure. It’s also used inhaled by patients with thick mucus plugging to break up the mucus in the airways.

The doses we use to treat liver failure are incredibly high and almost without any ADR, so any amount you get from a supplement is very safe unless you eat entire bottles at once.

No legitimate reason but...

4. Helps Relieve Symptoms of Respiratory Conditions

NAC can relieve symptoms of respiratory conditions by acting as an antioxidant and expectorant, loosening mucus in your air passageways.

As an antioxidant, NAC helps replenish glutathione levels in your lungs and reduces inflammation in your bronchial tubes and lung tissue.

People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) experience long-term oxidative damage and inflammation of lung tissue, which causes airways to constrict — leading to shortness of breath and coughing.

NAC supplements have been used to improve COPD symptoms, exacerbations and lung decline (17Trusted Source, 18Trusted Source, 19).

In a one-year study, 600 mg of NAC twice a day significantly improved lung function and symptoms in those with stable COPD (20Trusted Source).

Those with chronic bronchitis can also benefit from NAC.

Bronchitis occurs when the mucous membranes in your lungs’ bronchial passageways become inflamed, swell and shut off airways to your lungs (21Trusted Source, 22Trusted Source).

By thinning mucus in your bronchial tubes and boosting glutathione levels, NAC may help decrease the severity and frequency of wheezing, coughing and respiratory attacks (23).

In addition to relieving COPD and bronchitis, NAC may improve other lung and respiratory tract conditions like cystic fibrosis, asthma and pulmonary fibrosis, as well as symptoms of nasal and sinus congestion due to allergies or infections (24

Can't have people treating their COVID related respiratory issues on their own and getting better without getting the vax

There might be. People have studied milk thistle for similar reasons at the U of Maryland.

This is one of the most baffling statements that practically every drug warns against. Am I going to shite my brains out or be stopped up like a toilet with a ten pound two foot long turd in it?

Yeah but they aren’t robust studies. There are “studies” to give enough of an idea to suggest it.

My wife has been following this pretty closely and there is no reason why this all of a sudden requires a prescription. High amounts cause problems is such a BS reason. High amounts of Taco Bell causes diarrhea too. Let’s make that prescription only.

IT IS CLEAR THIS IS NOT ABOUT HEALTH ANYMORE!

It’s a running tongue in cheek joke among pharmacists that Tylenol wouldn’t be OTC if it attempted to get OTC approval in today’s world.

Pharma wants clients. Functional medicine doesn’t provide them clients. Pharma has lobbyists. Functional medicine not so much. There is your answer.

mostly just rat models. it doesn't mean you can drink more alcohol in 1 sitting, it may increase your cellular capacity to mitigate toxic effects of the metabolites. like its used for tylenol OD, by helping your body process the toxic metabolites of tylenol. basically its good for hangovers and general antioxidant protection vs a person with a poor diet. it helps the upstream supply one of the more used metabolic pathways of your liver, once your supply is depleted you switch to worse pathways.

quote:

The results of our study show that co-administration of NAC diminishes oxidative stress, by increasing antioxidant enzymes. This restoration of oxidant/antioxidant balance is reflected by lower levels of transaminases, ALP, and GGT. Although the decrease in serum level of the latter two enzymes was not significant, tissue levels were lower. NAC has been used in acetaminophen intoxication. It reduces the incidence of organ failure and enhances survival[22]. It acts by reducing tissue hypoxia, mediated by the activity of the nitric oxide/soluble guanylate cyclase system[1]. Cysteine derived from NAC also serves as a precursor of glutathione which forms conjugates with carbon tetrachloride metabolites[23] and increases intracellular glutathione concentrations[1]. In a recent study, NAC - in a lower dose than used in the current study - has been shown to prevent the fatty acid changes produced by ethanol and also reduce inflammatory response by reducing the level of prostaglandin[

Off topic, somewhat but, I went to a doctor's office yesterday and all the staff were wearing T-Shirts with,
"Trust Healthcare Again", on the back.

Amazon hasn't carried it for years. I know because i used to take it when I drank a bunch.

Plenty of places to still get it right now. The only thing i found it useful for was not getting a hangover but it makes you feel kinda weird the next day.

This move by the FDA actually hurts the low income folks disproportionately. Most middle to upper class have the connections to acquire NAC pretty easily.

The powers that be want to keep control over one more aspect of their lives.
