Seems awfully light, and he probably won't serve half of that.

Didn’t that use to be a major crime?

Michael McMahon was charged with being hired as a private investigator to surveil a New Jersey resident who was accused by China of corruption, as part of a global campaign by Chinese law enforcement to repatriate alleged criminals living abroad, known as "Operation Fox Hunt."

just to add some context retired cop working as a private investigator for what he thought was an asset recovery company 7 years ago to return a chinese expat back to china to face corruption charges.

Very misleading article title, for clicks of course. He wasn't stealing state secrets, he was a private investigator taking pictures of someone who was accused of a crime by another government (China). Still ought to know who you're working for.

Probably only one of more than we’d want to realize and acknowledge to ourselves throughout this country.
U.S. politicians and business opened the door decades ago to CCP, and the communists have taken full advantage.
It was never the Chinese Communist government’s intention to allow itself to ultimately become obsolete someday once opened to Western influence. Instead, they’d put on a friendly face ….and get to work on subtly influencing us.
Something about chess to our checkers comes to mind…
