If she can claim that taking a 10 minute ride into space makes her an astronaut, then I can claim to be a gynecologist.

Commander Alan Shepard (USN) was chosen to be one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts after undergoing a rigorous training and testing program that had never been tried before. He was then selected from those elite 7 (6, actually - due to a late-detected heart murmur, Deke Slayton didn’t fly Mercury) to fly the prime mission. He was literally the tip of Tom Wolfe’s metaphorical pyramid. He then later walked on the Moon as mission commander of Apollo 14. He was the epitome of “The Right Stuff”.

Gayle King threw a wad of money at Jeff Bezos for a quick ride. Slight difference.

It wasn't a "ride" bro. She was doing experiments and shite.

No one. Sure, Jan.

She's not even close.

From an article on Shepard's flight:

quote:

Despite its diminutive size, the 2,500-pound Mercury spacecraft (or capsule as it came to be referred to) was a marvel of aerospace engineering. It had all the systems required of a space-faring craft. Key among these were flight attitude, electrical power, communications, environmental control, reaction control, retro-fire package, and recovery systems.

quote:

Nearing apogee, Shepard manually controlled Freedom 7 in all 3 axes. In doing so, he positioned the capsule in the required 34-degree nose-down attitude. Retro-fire occurred on-time and the retro package was jettisoned without incident. Shepard then pitched the spacecraft nose to 14 degrees above the horizon preparatory to reentry into the earth’s atmosphere.

Nobody talked like this when 94 yo William Shatner made the exact same trip.

The audacity to compare herself to the best of the best can only be attributed to utter ignorance.

Miss Baker, if she was still alive, would have a few things to say to Gayle King about space flight.

have you seen them voting with their "feelings" and virtue signaling? Society has it right. There are some good women out there, but the majority have turned into zanex popping virtue signaling lunatics. Women do not belong in infantry nor should they vote.

On the one hand, she's got a point - Shepard did make a suborbital flight, largely controlled remotely from the ground in a similar profile to this flight.

On the other hand, at that point, exactly 1 other human had flown in space. Shepard was doing important, dangerous work in an experimental spacecraft (ETA: And he was the first to take it up).

The *ahem* "ladies" who just flew were tourists on a ride.

It was a "ride". Nothing more. Nothing less. Alan Shepherd had to pilot his craft. All she did was sit in a seat on the way up and down and float around for a minute or so when in zero g. They posed for a group picture before getting on a fair ride

This person actually compared herself to Alan Shepard?

What a delusional bitch. What’s sad is she probably believes it.
