The Walt Disney Company lost its top spot at the global box office in 2023 as the studio experienced an unprecedented string of woke flops, including The Marvels, Wish, and the latest Indiana Jones sequel.

For the past seven years, Disney has reigned supreme thanks in large part to its Marvel and Pixar brands. But this year, Universal took the No. 1 spot, propelled by The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer.

quote:

The dethroning of Disney marks the latest piece of bad news for the beleaguered studio, which is seeing returned CEO Bob Iger flounder in his job. The company experienced a bloodbath in 2023 in the form of 7,000 layoffs worldwide, with more cuts to come.

Meanwhile, Disney’s streaming services continue to lose billions of dollars. As a result, prices have gone up — way up. In 2023, the company hiked Disney+’s monthly subscription price to $13.99 from $10.99 — a 27 percent increase.

But the growing number of box office failures is perhaps the biggest blow to Disney’s prestige.

quote:

The unprecedented losing streak is shocking for a studio that used to mint money at the theater thanks to brands like Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm. Woke messaging — including aggressive promotion of the LGBTQ agenda — has turned off millions of paying customers.

Seems like it's more that they didn't make any appealing movies compared to other years

Not appealing to normal people, yes.

Woke movies are a subset of unappealing movies, you're obfuscating...

Systemically, Disney is a broken company. Quality is down, across the board. Wokeness has metastasized throughout the company's many divisions.

Frankly, it probably can't be fixed even if Peltz gets onto the board. Too much of Iger's influence permeates the company. Would take 10 to 15 years of hard fighting by a new management team to right that ship and by that time, the fans that have left will not come back.

Not really. They didn't have any star wars movies and the marvel movies they had last year weren't anything that appealing to general audience outside of guardians of the galaxy. It was a down year because they put out a less than ideal product. They didn't just become woke last year

It's true that they just didn't become woke last year.....but the woke movies were at the forefront and the centerpiece of their releases last year. It wasn't appealing to a general audience because the stories sucked due to pandering.

Very stupid business decision.

They've been on the decline for a while now. This trend is older than a year and their wokeism has harmed sales on their previously successful franchises.

Because of a lack of their normal lineup of blockbusters

Those movies would have taken a backseat if they had some big Avengers or Star Wars movies out last year

BTW which movies do you consider "woke" that they came out with last year off the top of your head?

Woke Avenger or Star Wars movies wouldn't have turned huge profits either and they'd be in a similar position - losing prestige.

Powerbottom is utterly confused by that South Park episode. Might as well be in Chinese.

As long as Disney continues to allow Iger to plow the into the dirt, they will continue to lose money.

It’s hard to compete with Mario & Luigi.

Are they “losing” money or just not making as much?

I really hated how successful Mario was. It was an objectively bad movie and a huge cash grab. But it worked.

Their movies are losing money. Their profits are shrinking. They are in decline. And it's Iger's fault. The board is failing in its duties.

There are no big Star Wars movies now because of the characters. The same goes for Marvel. That's the point you don't seem to understand.

They put sub characters at the forefront such as female leads to promote a narrative when the overwhelming majority of the audience is not interested. Even to the point when the original Captain Marvel was a man.

They made Thor who is one of the strongest characters in all of the movies look like a bumbling idiot who took a backseat to 2 strong female leads.

If they made the focal point of the Barbie movie Ken how many women do you think would have seen it?
