Harvard Study Finds Wind Turbines Will Cause More Warming In Minnesota Than Emissions Reductions Would Avert

quote:

A 2018 study conducted by scientists from Harvard, published in the academic journal Joule, found that wind turbines cause significant local increases in surface temperatures in the areas where they are located. Wind turbines cause local temperature increases at the surface of the earth by causing air to mix throughout portions of the atmosphere, and Minnesota would be one of the states impacted most by this phenomenon. Warming Wind Turbines According to the study, wind turbines measuring between 100 and 150 meters (328ft to 498 ft) operating at night can pull down warmer air from as far as 1,640 feet in the air down to the surface, warming the surface of the earth, where it would impact the people, plants, and animals living near the turbines. The study looks at what would happen if the United States tried to obtain all of its energy from wind turbines. It found the mixing of warmer air and cooler air results in a temperature increase of 0.54 degrees Celsius (0.97 degrees F) in the areas where the wind turbines would be located, as you can see in the figure below from the study. The amount of warming experienced in some regions would be even greater, as Southwestern Minnesota could see a temperature increase of 0.6-0.8 degrees C due to wind turbines, while Northeastern Minnesota would see an increase of 0.3-0.5 degrees C.

Minnesota should do this everywhere. It’s to damn cold there.

Plus the birds. Lots of birds killed by blades. Can’t recall I’ve ever had a bird hit my windshield. Bird poop yes but not the actual bird.

I was in Oahu last week and noticed tons of wind turbines in the rural areas, with only about 15% actually working.

What a boondoggle.

Thanks Obama!

haven't delved into this study but this

Doesn't sound logical to me.

The blades turn by the force of the surface wind - how does that 'pull down' air from above.

only thing I can think of is that the area downwind of the turbine creates a low pressure area because the normal flow of the wind has been slowed by the action of turning the blades.

The blades slow down the wind so it makes it less cold

Higher the altitude cooler the air - roughly for every 1k feet in altitude = 2 degree temp drop. This makes zero sense.

California Condor is lower on the groomer give a shite scale than the wind turbine. Too bad for them i guess.

For the same generation rate, the climatic impacts from solar photovoltaic systems are about ten times smaller than wind systems. Wind’s overall environmental impacts are surely less than fossil energy. Yet, as the energy system is decarbonized, decisions between wind and solar should be informed by estimates of their climate impacts.

Ok. Better than fossil energy but not as neutral has solar. Got it.

The above quote is from the linked publication, not the right wing blog page that misrepresents wind energy as being worse than fossil energy.

I did once but it was already dead. The guy in front of me hit it first.

Texas wind farm affects land temperature

By Patrick Lynch,
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
A Texas region containing four of the world's largest wind farms showed an increase in land surface temperature over nine years that researchers have connected to local meteorological effects of the turbines.

The land surface temperature around the west-central Texas wind farms warmed at a rate of 0.72 degrees Celsius per decade during the study period relative to nearby regions without wind farms, an effect most likely caused by the turbulence in turbine wakes acting like fans to pull down warmer air from higher altitudes at night, said lead author Liming Zhou at the University of Albany, State University of New York.

The blade turn because blade is an airfoil. Low pressure on the back of blade moves the blade. So that lower pressure could in theory suck down air above it.

Plus…I imagine the inertia of the windmills creates a chain reaction with the other windmills creating the farm’s own weather. Sort of like feeding on itself.
