Can anyone who may be paying more attention to this than me tell me why it's illegal to bury unflattering stories?

"Davidson is seen as a vital building block for the prosecution’s case that Trump and his allies schemed to bury unflattering stories in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election. He represented both McDougal and porn actor Stormy Daniels in negotiations that resulted in the purchase of rights to their claims of sexual encounters with Trump and those stories getting squelched, a tabloid industry practice known as “catch-and-kill.”

Trump should have had 56 high-ranking Security Officials sign off on a piece of paper declaring it "Russian Disinformation."

It's not.

Funny, nothing happens with Slick Willy and Paula Jones...

But that's (D)ifferent.

Yeah, it's called election interference initiated by the DOJ.

Because the DA is a Democrat, and the judge is a Democrat, and they know the jury pool will be mostly Democrats.

NY has a pretty wacky business records law.

It wouldn't be illegal to just buy the story outright, but if they concealed the fact that they bought the story, it could violate the NY law.

Same with the sex hush money stuff.

If they had just written a check from Trump Corp (whichever company was involved) or Trump personally, there would be no issues. That is not what they did.

The DOJ? This is a NY state court proceeding.

One could argue it is the DOJ that is pulling the state's strings.

I am not a Trump fan, but his trial is reaching at best.

Its because he classified the payment to Cohen (for stormy) as a legal fee. The prosecutor is claiming that he falsified business expenses... which is a misdemeanor, but it can be a felony if you are doing it to cover up other crimes.

quote:

all 34 counts against Trump are classified as felonies—with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg arguing that the allegedly falsely labeled payments were done to cover up other crimes, including Cohen’s campaign finance crimes and alleged tax issues, as the payments to Cohen were falsely characterized as income rather than repayments.

its just a stretch to claim these are felonies... at best they are illegal in an indirect way.

There are so many legitimate problems with Trump... Alvin Bragg is just trying to make a name for himself in NYC with this bs.

One could also argue that the DOJ could easily have charged him with federal campaign finance violations.

Because Trump has a (R) instead of a (D) next to his name. It’s a simple as that.

Welcome to the Banana Republic of America.

The looked at it and chose not to because they saw there was no crime to prosecute.
