The character in the original game in Japanese was already transgender. English and German translations were changed in 2004 to get rid of it. This is the original script Nintendo wrote back in 2004 for the original release.

No, that’s just a twist and Samus is based off of Ellen Ripley and Ridley is named after Ridley Scott. Not Woke at all.

That same page says that it’s a boy who presents themselves as a girl but is called a boy as an insult by its sisters. So it was a transgender in 2004
