No other country has a cemetery here, but we have cemeteries there.

And most of our current leaders don't give a damn what all those men and women died for.
They are trashing everything.
They are trashing everything.

It may or may not have something to do with the fact that no other country has expended tens or hundreds of thousands of lives fighting wars on our soil for our benefit.

And no one gives a damn anymore.
I also don't believe this is true. France, Belgium, and the Netherlands are pretty serious about maintaining the US cemeteries located there.

What prompted this?
As sort of alluded above, we haven't had an invading force on our soil (officially) in over 200 years. I'm not sure what you might expect, or what this melt? is about.

Bucket list of mine is the war cemeteries and battlefields of France and Belgium from the Western Front of WWI.

Worth noting that he's from WW2, not the Battle of New Orleans

my list includes seeing the changing of the colors at Lafayette’s tomb in Paris. I think it’s important to continue rituals like that for the West’s collective sense of itself

Went to the one in Luxembourg in 2019 where Patton is buried. Pretty impactful and beautifully maintained.

The money we are about to light on fire in Ukraine and the way our leaders are trashing our constitution.
Pretty much everything political right now.
No one gives a shite how many people died to give us what we have/had.
Yes it was a melt.

What country have we given land to here for a cemetery?
Posted on 4/17/24 at 4:27 pm to loogaroo
Cemeteries might be the most irrelavent wasteful etc use of land and resources on Earth.

At the Somme, you can trace the old trench lines by the cemeteries dotting the farmland. Some have just a few soldiers, others tens of thousands.
I have a bizarre, dark fixation with WWI.

Same.

On 4 July 1917, three months after the United States entered World War I on the side of France and her Allies, U.S. Army Colonel Charles E. Stanton visited the General's tomb. Col. Stanton placed an American flag, uttering the famous phrase: "Lafayette, we are here."

America has joined forces with the Allied Powers, and what we have of blood and treasure are yours. Therefore it is that with loving pride we drape the colors in tribute of respect to this citizen of your great republic. And here and now, in the presence of the illustrious dead, we pledge our hearts and our honor in carrying this war to a successful issue. Lafayette, we are here.

I'm talking about our current leaders. I've been to several in Europe. They are very appreciative. More so than just about any current member of this congress and administration.
