On This Day in History, 1954: Brown v. Board of Education is decided

For whatever failings there are today in our education system, the SCOTUS got it right when they determined that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional.

In a major civil rights victory, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down an unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. The historic decision, which brought an end to federal tolerance of racial segregation, specifically dealt with Linda Brown, a young African American girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school in Topeka, Kansas, because of the color of her skin.
In 1896, the Supreme Court ruled in Plessy v. Ferguson that "separate but equal" accommodations in railroad cars conformed to the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection. That ruling was used to justify segregating all public facilities, including elementary schools. However, in the case of Linda Brown, the white school she attempted to attend was far superior to her black alternative and miles closer to her home. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) took up Linda’s cause, and in 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka reached the Supreme Court. African American lawyer (and future Supreme Court justice) Thurgood Marshall led Brown’s legal team, and on May 17, 1954, the high court handed down its decision.
In an opinion written by Chief Justice Earl Warren, the nation’s highest court ruled that not only was the “separate but equal” doctrine unconstitutional in Linda’s case, it was unconstitutional in all cases because educational segregation stamped an inherent badge of inferiority on African American students. A year later, after hearing arguments on the implementation of their ruling, the Supreme Court published guidelines requiring public school systems to integrate “with all deliberate speed.”
Brown v. Board of Ed served to greatly motivate the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s and ultimately led to the abolishment of racial segregation in all public facilities and accommodations.

A GREAT day for equality, followed by many bad days of trying to achieve more better equality by abridging the rights of others, picking winners and losers, destroying schools and cities, destroying public education, etc.

The busing across town that we do now is not remotely associated to this USSC decision.

I was enjoying the 2019 LSU run and didn't want to even think about politics. Especially during The Inpeacherments. And anyway, back in the old days voices like ours were needed here. People had no clarity on American culture and politics. And then there was this Awakening and now there are so many excellent posters who make great points, I try to just read and stay out of the fray. I tend to hang out on the OT or SEC Rant these days.

That's not what happened. Brown demanded integration. You see the brave young black people entering the white school that they CHOSE to enter. That wasn't enough. Most blacks wanted to stay segregated. So, they forced the schools to pair off and bus students to white schools they didn't want to go to. The black students rioted in New Iberia. We were on CBS evening news.
Brown was supposed to be about freedom of choice. It became forced everything.

I've been back on this board for 24 hours and I've already reduced two extremely paranoid posters to tears, been told I have the power to ban people, been told that I am scary, been magically changed into a Jew, been prayed for, received countless down votes, and really too many other PT-specific things to mention.
This place is magical.

It was also yet another data point proving that stare decisis is Latin for “an excuse we use when we like the precedent.”

Only on this board does a post in support of Brown v. Board get 8 down votes

Serious question I was wondering the other day:
Were the schools black folks went to back in the day really that much worse than many they are stuck in now?
You can ask this question while still being for the ruling in this case. People ought to be able to go wherever they want to go. Now it is the leftists who "care" so much who block school choice every chance they get.
Of course you probably cannot ask the question without being called a racist.
I wonder what sort of idiocy it takes to think you can bus people around wherever you want and not have them change their housing patterns. It reminds me of the static analysis leftists use in planning budgets.

My second thought was: WTF am I doing here?

Whoever is downvoting isn't defending it.
I assume because a downvote can be done anonymously and nobody wants to be known as a racist asshat.

Someone might want to remind colleges about this. They seem to have forgotten.
