re: Steven Van Zandt: ‘Bruce Springsteen backing the Democrats lost us half our audience’

I grew up in the 70s-early 80s. I honestly don't remember Bruce being that big. He was just another rocker that had put some songs out. This revisionist history by northeastern media types that he was some iconic star like the Beatles or Elvis is just false. Honestly, in South Florida, Bob Seger was a much bigger star than Springsteen.

Were you in a coma from 1984-1987 during which time he had 10 top 10 hits?

Because Bruce is a POS. Gets DUI’s and only gets a slap on the wrist

He hasn't kept his mouth shut about politics either

I was told growing up when you're at a mixed dinner table, it's smart to avoid politics and religion. These loons never learned that lesson.
I don't mind libs being artists -- I can appreciate their art but when their "art" is all about politics, I usually don't patronize them anymore. And it's only natural I'm going to like artists who do agree with my pov.

A lot of people liked him then for sure, but I always thought his music was meh.

He hasn't done too bad for being woke:
1) He's a billionaire
2) His concerts sell out....in the US ( and Europe & Australia)
3) Multiple Billboard top 5 albums ...11 #1 albums
4) scores of Top 10 singles
He may be a hard-core Democrat and has a love fest going on with Tom Morello and the late Pete Steger, but his music holds up.
....Republicans AND Conservatives buy his albums and go to his concerts as well as Democrats. You can hate him, but you cannot deny the man's success.....and talent.

I guess people were ignorant as to Springsteen's overall politics for at least the last 4 decades. He makes no secret about it.
But, I don't see many of his songs as being really political. There's stuff on The Rising that is somewhat political and a track or two on Magic that definitely is, and Born in the USA has political overtones especially the title track. But most of his stuff really is soft on the politics end and heavy on the storytelling side.

They're all terrible. I've never understood his success.

Is Springsteen, supposedly the ultimate heartland rocker, unable to play in certain places now?

Says more about Springsteen than it does about America. The 'utlimate heatland rocker" kinda gets exposed when his primary cause becomes stumping for international corporate oligarchy.

Never could understand Tom Petty's appeal especially after he did his stint as Dylan's backing band in the early to mid 80s , but there's no denying his success or appeal to many

This is why when you buy ice cream you have multiple choices. There's chocolate and vanilla......AND Strawberry, pistachio as well as Rocky Road.

Mellencamp had a good run in the 80s but since then has really faded. American Fool, Uh huh, Scarecrow and The Lonesome Jubilee are all first rate albums...especially Lonesome Jubilee, musically using the accordion and violin prominently in his tracks. He really hasn't done much in the last 25 -30 years of note.

Van Zamdt’s big issue was apartheid.
Most people agree that was an abusive and immoral system. He’s on. The right side of history
